Poll question: How many days a week do you work?
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 08:37 PM by Earth_First
In response to the House now 'required' to work a 5-day work week, I'm curious to know how many days a week folks here are required to work.

1. Whenever I need to
We run our own business. No day is sacrosanct. But I rarely work full 8 hour days. My husband on the other hand regularly puts in 9+ hour days. Just the difference between our jobs in the business; I'm admin, he's labor! :)

2. I work 3 days a week...
but I'm an RN and work 13-ish hours a day, so 3 days per week, 6 days per paycheck (roughly).

Although because hubby and I are childfree, my company was gracious enough to allow me to work several extra days throughout Thanksgiving and Christmas (I happily volunteered) so not only will I get the OT for working more than 36 hours/week, but I also get the holiday AND nighttime differential :D

However--because I work 7p-8a, my first "day off" is really wasted because say I work Monday and have off Tuesday--I go to work at 7pm on Monday and get off at 8am on Tuesday...then sleep til...3pm-ish on Tuesday. Day is completely wasted. Then if I have to work Wednesday I'm double fucked because I Have to sleep allll day Wednesday so I can go to work that night....

3. I work an alternative work schedule
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 08:28 PM by wyenot_us
Five nine hour days one week, 3 nine hour days and 1 eight hour day the next. I love it. I have at least 26 three days weekends a year.

5. I don't.
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 08:32 PM by Gregorian
I should clarify that by saying that I designed my life so that I don't need to work. I got lucky. And I worked hard for a very short period of time.

9. I'm paid to work 5 days a week, but I generally put in extra, without
the pay, just to keep my stress level down from being behind all the time.

I work whenever Hubby needs me. No pay, either, other than appreciation.
My other jobs are on a cash basis, so they are not reported.

11. Other:
I'm not sure which you mean. Do you mean how many days am I contracted and paid to work, or how many days I actually DO work?

My contract calls for 190 days a year. I work a "professional day." That means two things: I have to show up by a certain time, and can't leave before a certain time. I have the work day that I MUST be on duty. I also have to finish the job, whether it fits into the work day or not. Whether I take it home after hours, work on weekends, and work on "vacation" days, I have to complete the job. There is no pay for working outside the contractual "day," but all deadlines must be met no matter how much personal, uncredited time it takes.

So I work 190 paid days a year. I have to be "on duty" for 8 hours a day. I get 30 minutes "off duty" time out of that 8 hours for lunch...except that to get the job done I have to be on duty anyway, so I eat while I work. I am actually at work for about 10 hours a day; once or twice a month I will drift into the 11-12 hour range.

If you count weekends and non-contractual days, you can add another 30 or so full unpaid days to that 190.

15. 4 days, part time. I work a 15 hour week
I retired from a 40 hr + week that was so stressful it damn near killed me. I am 67; I retired at 65.

I work to have something to do and also to support my travel habit. I like to take trips that tend to be expensive but that go to places I want to go to and do things I want to do with people who have my education level and same interests. Right now I am going to Europe once a year. I went to Sicily in 05, Italy in 06 and am planning Spain/Portugal/Moracco in 07.

19. 5. Want to work more...
No social life, I may as well be useful and make more money to put away for retirement for myself... for I am my only family and I am the only one I can count on for myself.

I can't seem to get a 2nd job despite being well qualified.

I want to work hard, but nobody's giving me a chance.

At least I've got my current job, of which I'm hoping to keep. And the time left over I'll use to study for something else. That's the bright side to all this.

21. Can't participate in this poll now because I
lost my job last spring and am currently unemployed and going to get some training right now. However, at my last job, I routinely worked four 15-hour days each week with intermittent weekends. I had a generous amount of vacation time allowed but never had the time to take it off. It served in lieu of a severance package at the end though.

29. Seven days, baby, 24 hours a day.
That'd be parsed out as a 40-hour "real" work week and the rest as mommy-time. (And yes, the 40-hour "real" work time is easier. I do get to post on DU then!)
