My Mom says I'm wasting my life...
Watching the news and "hating people" like Bush, for example.

When a president signs laws that threatened our freedoms and liberties, and engages in wars of aggression against defenseless sovereign nations based on lies, what do you want me to do to Bush? Say "I love you" and offer him candies?

1. I think she's saying that there are some things we cannot control or change in life.
The best thing we can do is enjoy each day, because there may not be another.

I've been stuck on that stupid toad for 7 1/2 minutes!

If what you're doing, Dangerman, is wrong...you don't want to be right!

3. My mom doesn't quite put it in those terms
But I know she feels the same way.

She links my depression and lack of motivation on my increased political awareness since 2000. She's probably right.

She thinks I'd be so much happier if I stopped watching the news and reading stuff.

5. Which is why a lot of people do just that.
Cause facing the fact of just how precarious our situation is, is just not a lot of fun sometimes. Makes me wonder how the human race even got this far. We really our our own worst enemy.

13. that has been our problem not being politically savvy

4. It's not so much hate......
I consider it being vigilant to all the BS so we can make an effective push to hold them accountable. That we do it with gusto and enthusiasm is a GOOD thing.

6. Well ignore her. With knowledge inevitability comes suffering.
And with enough knowledge, you can make a difference through perseverance, tenacity, and ambition. Keep fighting! We are about to see change!

9. don't hate people
hate ideas. Hating people is counter productive. Odds are you will never be able to act on your feelings. Carrying them with you will just cause stress and depression. Hating the ideas they stand for is different. Contrary to what some believe, it is possible to fight an idea. Not by any conventional means of course (barring genocide). Propaganda of your own to counter what you feel is a grave injustice is a good start. Just look at the falling support for the war or the president if you need a recent example. Many people really are sheep.

11. I think Saint Francis of Assisi was brilliant.
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 09:24 PM by acmejack
"Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

If you are young enough to make yourself into somebody who can actually make that difference work do so. Don't let the years slip away from you, as they most assuredly will. Isn't it amazing how all of us old people sound like your parents? My Parents sounded like me, too! My Sister actually listened to my Parents and she is now a heavy duty real estate attorney pulling down the upper six figures, I am simply an old fool dispensing advice worth exactly what I am paid for it.

18. Perhaps, I am frustrated.
The system crushed me. I played the game and was "Jack Welched" at GE in 1990, at Westinghouse in 1996, retrained and went into Computers and got the axe at Dell in 2001 at age 51 when I had a major health issue which I am confident was brought on by the fact that 6000 of my co workers were being laid off around me and I was told my position was being eliminated "through attrition".

I was transferred to one of the least desirable jobs they could find in an effort to make me quit before I could get vested. Telephone support for Rent a Center customers at night-it was terrible! But I made it and saved my pension. But I am basically a failure-from rising engineering star to disabled bum. I can't even get a response to a resume now, hundreds mailed over the last years. I sued the Long term Disability Insurer, they now send negative information to anyone who checks on me, I get letters from them saying they shared information, as is "their right", so I am screwed.

Lucky I am a disabled Vet or I would be with nothing. At least I have medical and I get disability. Quite a lifestyle change though, I learned the hard way about pride goeth before a fall. And about being on the street. I have a lot of empathy now, from real first hand experience.

19. find out what they are sending.
if they are sending any health info out you can nail them with HIPAA violations. There is very little they can legally share with other companies.

Sam Adams, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington (insert patrot's name here) wasted his life reading the news and hating King George III.

14. Yeah, my mom used to rag on me about wasting my life,
ruining my life, blah, blah etc., mostly doing what I liked to do. She didn't have to pay for my lifestyle, but it didn't stop her. She meant well, I know. However your life is your life not her's. Let her know that. You sometimes have to fight back.

16. there is truth in that...
going thru life angry and frustrated is hard on the mind and body.

big changes aren't going to happen until the sky starts falling anyway, so get on with life for now, and work for change when the next election cycle starts up. your anger isn't going to accomplish anything between now and then anyway.

21. Of course not...
but you need to live a life separate from politics, also. It's okay to dislike the current administration and to be angry at them, but if that's your regular attitude and you are always angry Bush et al, then you might need to work on other emotions and living a life that will be fufilling to you.
