Paul Krugman:Two More Years
At a reception following the midterm election, President Bush approached Senator-elect James Webb.

“How’s your boy?” asked Mr. Bush.

(snip)
“That’s between me and my boy, Mr. President,” said Mr. Webb.

Good for him. We need people in Washington who are willing to stand up to the bully in chief. Unfortunately, and somewhat mysteriously, they’re still in short supply.

You can understand, if not condone, the way the political and media establishment let itself be browbeaten by Mr. Bush in his post-9/11 political prime. What’s amazing is the extent to which insiders still cringe before a lame duck with a 60 percent disapproval rating.

1. "How do you ask a man to be the last to die for a bully’s ego?"
My favorite sentence in Krugman's essay.

3. The last line of the article is great
"Well, here’s a question for those who might be tempted, yet again, to shy away from a confrontation with Mr. Bush over Iraq: How do you ask a man to be the last to die for a bully’s ego?"

It's true. Bush is a bully, and his ego is causing much needless death and suffering. Stop funding the war, it that's the only way to get our troops out. Otherwise, all the deaths will be casualties of Bush's ego.

4. I don't think it's just Bush they cringe and fret over.
It's the reactionary Right Wing talk radio and Fox News lunatics that have been acting as twisted hallway monitors, always chastising, bullying, pissing and moaning over any story that reflects bad on the Republicans. I think the media has bent over backwards to prove that their not "liberals".

9. I wouldn't be surprised to find out the NSA domestic spying program
has dirt on many of the new folks. Let's face it - Michael Hayden & crew have been listening for the last six years.

8. What really annoys me about the discussion around
Edited on Mon Dec-04-06 05:56 AM by malaise
Webb's 'brilliant' response is MSM's crap about civility is that they seem more concerned with polite conversation than with the slaughter of people's kids in an invasion based on lies. MSM is still keeping up this bullshit despite the polls. They are all on the take.

10. Wouldn't be so sure about 2 more years...
This clown is so arrogant(Bush, if you couldn't guess)that I'm coming around to think that the country will want him out of the way before long. He will become 'the problem'. There's not much doubt that the evidence is there to remove both he and Cheney. But the country would rather not get into that process, at least not yet. But in about another 6-8 weeks this view may chnge drastically.

11. Bush's ego is bigger than America.
That's the problem. Any leader with a lesser sense of entitlement would have stepped down long ago.

12. "The Civil War Will Get Even Worse After We’re Gone,
and that there will probably be a bloody bout of ethnic cleansing that effectively partitions the country into hostile segments.

But nobody — not even Donald Rumsfeld, it turns out — thinks we’re making progress in Iraq. So the same terrible things that would happen if we withdrew soon will still happen if we delay that withdrawal for two, three or more years. The only difference is that we’ll sacrifice many more American lives along the way."

Catch-22.

Thank's, Chimp.

13. Joseph Cannon suggests that "How's your boy?" is an implied threat
http://cannonfire.blogspot.com/

Let's say you're watching a film about a crusading D.A. who has targeted a seemingly untouchable crime kingpin. The D.A. has a son who works in a garage. One night, a mysterious explosion destroys this garage. Although no-one is harmed, nerves are frazzled.

Soon after, the D.A. and the kingpin meet at a fancy social function. The fat crime boss, dressed in a resplendent three-piece suit, approaches the crusading prosecutor. The crime lord takes a puff on his cigar, flashes a dazzling grin, and asks:

"How's your boy?"

Everyone in the audience would understand the subtext.
