WASHINGTON (AP) — An Ohio congressman urged a rival lawmaker to resign his current leadership post before Thursday's election to select a new majority leader.
"I'm not going to sit here and tell you I've got the votes, like someone else keeps telling us," Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in a meeting with reporters Tuesday. "If he's so confident, he should be very confident stepping down as whip."
Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., is the No. 3-ranked leader in the House and the establishment candidate to replace Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, who stepped down as majority leader after legal troubles.
Blunt claims at least 120 supporters among the 232 Republicans who can vote for party leaders. That is more than the 117 votes needed to win. Boehner and a third candidate, Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., claim about 140 supporters between them, adding up to more votes than exist...
