A US diplomat warned Georgia against signing a long-term contract for natural gas supplies with Iran, saying in an interview published Monday that such a deal would be "unacceptable" for the United States.

The weekly newspaper Kviris Palitra reported US Ambassador to Georgia John Tefft said the persistent energy problems that the poor, ex-Soviet republic has endured in recent years - most recently last winter when an explosion on Russian gas pipeline cut supplies for the country.

"In these ... circumstances Georgia had to purchase a certain amount of gas from Iran. The US met the fact with understanding, but long-term strategic partnership between Iran and Georgia in that sphere is unacceptable for us," Tefft was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

1. The Ugly (Corporate Puppet) Americans
All the resources of the world are ours and we are the boss of you.

What? We gonna bring democracy to every nation state that thinks it gets a voice in its own operation and decisions?

Gonna take a lot more Marines. Better have the Bush Twins measured for uniforms.

2. In Other Words, "That's Our Gas That We Plan To Steal"
Similar to response to India/Pakistan regarding pipeline from Iranian fields.

3. I think Iran sucks on human rights
I think the US has the right to have a policy forbidding importation of anything from Iran to the US. Though if we are to believe those who explain away the gouging of the West on oil, we import indirectly undifferentiated crude.

I may be naive, but since we are accused of culturally "infecting" these kinds of places, then it would seem that our best move is to encourage as much trade as possible. This would be inconsistent with both the right and the left, the right encouraging embargo/boycott of certain countries and the left doing the same for others.
