Now that the election is over and we have taken back Congress, I am going after the thing that has stuck in my craw for the past six years. The rescinding of Bush’s Global Gag Order. Signing it in January, 2001 was his first official act.

The Order cut off U.S. funding for International Planned Parenthood groups. The language is simple but the implications have devastated Third World Nations. It not only stopped abortion funding but cut off important information on women’s reproductive health, birth control info and the distribution and use of condoms for safe sex in stemming the spread of HIV/AIDS.

I have already enlisted the aid of my District’s state senator who has said she will try to get the support of three of the state’s Democratic Congressman. Now, I need some suggestions from DU members to get the ball rolling.

Keep in mind that Order has probably caused the birth of thousands, maybe millions, of children who have starved or are starving to death throughout Third World Nations plus the rampant spread of the HIV/AIDS virus.

but where there is a will, there is a way and I'm going after it in the best way I can with the help of anyone interested in this project. How many newborns have to starve to death because of the act of an idiot.

I also firmly believe religion had nothing to do with Bush signing that Order. I think it was to guarantee international corporations like - Wal-Mart - a steady supply of cheap labor!

If there's an organized plan for attacking this thing, let me know. (Although I think his recent appointment to the head of family planning tells you that he would dig in his heels on the issue.)

I tried to contact NARAL last week about this and don't know if it got through or not. I'm certain my state senator will know how to reach them. I'm determined about this. I may not have the money but i have the computer - my only luxury - and tons of time.

And Bush didn't even know what he was doing, he was just doing it. Remember when the Black Caucus, I think it was, met with him and 'splained the situation and he had this blank, uncomprehending look on his face?
