when he died .. he was pretty much security stripped

The other question about Chimp is, can you get such a huge preselected audience that likes him?

6. This was back when the mighty Conemaugh....
...provided the water to make the steel mills run. If you went back to Johnstown now you'd see a lot of shuttered up buildings and a very depressed atmosphere.

14. It was worse in the early 80s...
By now, the city has adjusted somewhat. Many of the unemployed youth moved to Washington, DC during the great (ironic) expansion of government under Reagan. Many of the retired or near-retired stayed because of the collapse of the real estate market.

I was in college when he was assassinated. Like other people, I remember that day vividly.

12. FYI:
The photo was taken outside of the Gautier Works of Bethlehem Steel.

A friend I was visting last year had it on his office wall, and I got a Xerox. It's been on my office wall ever since and today I took it down and scanned it.

19. That looks familiar
When JFK campaigned in Hazleton the scene was pretty much the same. I was in 10th grade at the time. I voluteered to be a Kennedy Girl along with many others from my high school.

23. It was at Memorial Stadium
Edited on Thu Nov-23-06 11:34 AM by troubleinwinter
The crowd was 88,000-90,000, according to 'the internets'.

A snip from that day:

"...we must think and act not only for the moment but for our time. I am reminded of the story of the great French Marshal Lyauty, who once asked his gardener to plant a tree. The gardener objected that the tree was slow-growing and would not reach maturity for a hundred years. The Marshal replied, 'In that case, there is no time to lose, plant it this afternoon.'"
~John F. Kennedy, Address at UC Berkeley, Charter Day, March 1962

The Greek Theater only holds about 8,500. It sure is the place for music concerts!! Here's a memory for ya:
