I don't really believe that. I just got tired of seeing the thread about the "greatest generation" being bigots.

Neither heading fits those of us on DU. Does it?

about how young people today don't know the meaning of the word "work".

4. I dont think so - However the new culture of violence doesn't help.
No I don’t think that the new generation is formed of bigots. I personally feel that a person is worth only what he makes himself in society. Regardless of race, color, creed or national origin. I also think that the majority of young people like myself feel this way. However I will say this - I think rap music, drugs, violence and this new qauzi “gangster” culture that is far too often seen in minority groups tends to strain race relations. Too many people think that being in a gang or being “gangster” is what it means to be black. I have hade black friends that were critiqued by other black students for being “to white.” This truly saddens me to think that so many young people are being brain washed by the culture of violence they see on television and in music :(

23. No problem ;)
So you live in Alaska?.... I live in San Diego, CA - great beach weather here. Then again when isn't it. I will admit though, I certainly like to vacation in the northwestern mountains during winter.

5. Everything is a matter of perspective...
but some perspectives are really stupid, pointless and/or useless (especially the ones that go on about how the older/younger generations is this/that). They may even be worse than useless--to the extent they seek to cause further divisions and stir up trouble between Democrats.

There really are differences of opinion, attitude and perspective between those with more years to their name versus those with less. Sometimes this is flattering to one or the other group, sometimes not. People who lay claim to some modicum of wisdom are generally able to understand that every generation of people experiences different customs, culture, events and that these differences make for some difficulty in communicating with and understanding people of groups outside your own.

Democrats tend to be more tolerant and even take pride in that. This is just another instance in which some are struggling with intolerance. Give the other person the benefit of the doubt and educate yourself about what individuals of different generations have lived through or live with and see if you can't understand why they think the way they do. If that's too much work, have the courtesy to keep your insults to yourselves. (this message is not directed towards the poster of this thread; who, it seems to me, is just trying to highlight this apparent display of intolerance).

6. Ooooooooooooooooooo. You did it this time!
My daughter (a PhD candidate) is one of them slackers!!!

My dad was "greatest generation", WWII and Korea. He was most assuredly a bigot. Anyone who wasn't white, Anglo-Saxon and CATHOLIC was inferior. And God help you if you weren't of Irish descent!!

Mom wasn't. No slurs allowed from us kids - mom would use the flyswatter!!

So, okay, you slackers!! Show us oldies (60's & 70's) hippies what ya got!!

7. They may be a bunch of lazy slackers but
I sure do appreciate how many of them voted in our recent election. And also who they voted for. I haven't read any of the posts regarding the greatest generation so I don't know what that age is anyway. Maybe thats a good thing?

14. You do know that only 24% of eligible youth voted, don't you
vs 60+ for those 42 and older.

there has been a lot of hype about how many voted since it was up 4% but, gee, hardly reason to pat themselves on the back.

16. As the person who posted that thread, that was my entire point
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 01:56 AM by Hippo_Tron
It was a response to people calling my generation a bunch of lazy, slacker, weaklings when clearly the broad brush doesn't fit all of us and clearly other generations do have their flaws as well.

I agree with you 100%. Neither heading fits those of us on DU. My biggest mistake was using Greatest Generation to include early boomers/war babies because I couldn't fit all of them into the subject line. I should've just said "hey old people" but that seemed a bit crude.

25. I love my Dad but
growing up he would freak out in the car on family drives/vacations when my "metalhead" brother would put a Metallica tape (the late 80's, early 90's, before CDs) into the tape deck. He would yell at both of us and scream "What the @##@#%&%*&$ is that? Its not even music! Its pure noise, pure crap!" However, my brother and I both enjoyed his Beatles collection. Mom was much cooler and only freaked out about Slayer. Said they were devil worshippers. Oh well. We turned out fine at ages 34 and 30 respectively. We get along great with our parents even though they are conservatives and bro and I are liberals. We agree to disagree. I vote, bro refuses to. My Grandmother's various boyfriends have always been bigoted towards the Japenese. They says its because of WWII. I try to explain that it was 50 years ago but they are stuck in their ways. Every generation makes mistakes. Every generation has good/bad qualities. My Grandmother (who is not bigoted) was very hardworking and learned to make do without because of the depression. My parents were influenced by 60's and my Mom was the only female accountant at her workplace in 1969. Bro and I grew up knowing technology better than any generation before it, we played first video games on Atari. Computers were not in schools until our generation (remember those macs?). Internet took of when I was 19 in college. No generation is the "best". Our grandparents had an obvious threat and stood up to the challenge of it. World is more grey today, more confusing.
