Gov. Blagojevich is starting his second term making a smart choice for a top job. He's tapping wounded Iraq war vet Tammy Duckworth to be the new director of the Illinois Veterans Affair Department.

"I thought it was a natural fit for me and my background,"Duckworth told me.

Duckworth, a Democrat, said after being defeated Nov 7th by Peter Roskam in a congressional contest that caught nationwide attention, she started pondering her future.

This Vet can tell you we are very happy with this pick. Tammy will fight for us veterans with everything she has. You got to wonder DU will the State Commander of the VFW go into hiding when he finds out the news. He did when the VFW PAC Endorsed Roskam.

From Sunday Novermenr 5, 2006:

VFW Rejects Iraq War Vet in Illinois 6th District Endorsement

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,227471,00.html

CHICAGO — The Veterans of Foreign Wars' political action committee Friday endorsed a Republican congressional candidate with no military experience over a Democrat who lost her legs in combat in Iraq.

The endorsement of GOP state Sen. Peter Roskam over Tammy Duckworth angered some Illinois veterans, as well as national figures such as former Sen. Bob Kerrey, a veteran who lost a leg in Vietnam.

"They should be ashamed of themselves," he said. "They have some explaining to do to their members."

Along that path blazed by Max Cleland.
