Anti-Bush protests intensify, Indonesian military steps up securityAssociated Press -- Protests against U.S. President George W. Bush's upcoming visit to Indonesia intensified Thursday as thousands turned out in more than a dozen cities and the military vowed to maintain order.
The visit comes amid rising public anger over U.S. policy in the Middle East and the U.S.-led invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, seen by many as attacks on Muslims.
Hundreds of students and Islamic activists held separate rallies in Jakarta on Thursday, gathering in front of the U.S. embassy, the presidential palace and the offices of several American businesses, including gold-mining giant Freeport.
Protests were also held in Bogor, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Medan, Banda Aceh, Garut, Gresik, Lampung, Lombok and Sulawesi's towns of Makassar, Pare-Pare and Palu.
