RANKS ARE GROWING-Dems NOT WILLING TO GIVE UP FIGHT!(Raw Story)
While filibuster still unlikely, ranks are growing, aides say
John Byrne
Published: January 30, 2006

Senior Democratic aides say the total number of Democratic senators who have committed to filibustering Bush Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito have risen to the "thirties," but are still unlikely to break the 40-strong mark required to block the nominee's confirmation, RAW STORY can report.

Aides stress that liberal activists' push to block the nominee -- spurred by Sen. John Kerry's (D-MA) push for a filibuster -- is changing the tide. But it may not be enough, they say.

Joe Shoemaker, Communications Director for Senate Democratic Whip Richard Durbin (R-IL), says Democrats are still trying to bring in the numbers to block Alito. As Democratic whip, Durbin is charged with rounding up the votes.

"I think that Durbin and other Democrats aren't willing to give up the fight," Shoemaker told RAW STORY Monday. "The numbers have been fluctuating all day."

1. Why not make sure the Repugs can't get 60? Write the right and ask them
to at least abstain

2. The time for arm-twisting is over
it's time to start busting kneecaps....

No support for the filibuster eh?

Okay, then no DCCC $$$$$$$$$ for your next campaign. An you what else? I'm not going to "discourage" that guy who wants to run against you in the primary......

Oh yeah, one more thing....how 'bout some TV ads in your district showing how you stabbed your supporters in the back? How will you deal with that?

7. It's time for the pressure, but I dislike the allusion to knee-capping
Withdrawing DCCC $$ is OK by me, but even if it will "cripple" a candidate's campaign, I'd rather not read about Democrats threatening knee-capping on other Democrats.

10. Inside of politics
"kneecapping" is understood to be political (as in cutting your opponent's support off at the knees) and not physical. Believe me, I've been on the receiving end of those threats, er,ah, make that promises a few times.

14. I think I understand it's an allusion.
I just think it's unnecessary for Democrats to descend into the lexicon of Tom Delay.

18. Just a point of clarification...
The DCCC is for the House of Representatives. I would suggest that if you want to effectively bust up kneecaps you aid for the DSCC... Just a suggestion.

9. Reports of the Left's Death have been GREATLY exaggerated!
Edited on Mon Jan-30-06 02:06 PM by Pithy Cherub
Those who cave or vote yes do need primary challenges. We have been soft on consequences arising from not doing the right thing when presented with the facts, knowledge, choice, and constituents on full tilt. Those who do not pay attention deserve to have their campaigns starved of cash, the people's volunteer efforts and attention in the Liberal Blogosphere.

C'mon Durbin, what are you persuading them with :spank:- their political peril is obviously not being felt fully, yet.

12. Soldiers who run from a battle have been threatened with
summary execution by their superiors. I think political execution of Democrats who run from this battle is appropriate.

16. No Democrat who votes for cloture on this matter
should be rewarded with renomination as a Democrat again. It's that important. It's time to make a stand.

20. He said "political execution"
That's akin to getting fired as head coach of the Green Bay Packers (but getting 3M a year for the last two years of your contract).

Not quite as painful as it seems.
