WASHINGTON - Just days after Democrats took over Congress, Americans embraced their top goals and President George W. Bush's job approval rating slid to 31 percent, according to a Newsweek poll issued on Saturday. Huge majorities of those polled said they approved of the legislative priorities cited by Democratic leaders after their party seized control of the Senate and the House of Representatives from Republicans, the magazine said.

20. It's the "fake it 'til you make it" mythology in the US.
Have you ever noticed how some poor folks drive upscale-brand automobiles? (Even old ones. Even ones that've been totaled - and 'repaired.') Their house might be a superfund site, but their car (and bling-bling) says "I've made it!"

Have you heard how kids are mugged for their upscale athletic shoes? There are some folks who think it's all about ACTING affluent.

Some folks look at the wealthy ... and try to be like them. "Fake it 'til you make it." These are not the deepest thinkers in our midst. These are not folks who have a bright audience - they're surrounded by other fools. (The big man in the local long neck chug and puke isn't working on his Master's degree in Philospophy.)

Being in the minority often doesn't bother them ... since that's what makes 'em "elite."

Such are the slack-jawed, knuckle-dragging Bush supporters.

15. Don't get too excited about overriding vetoes
We have the majority but not enough to override vetoes. For many individual issues, with Dinos included, we don't even have the majority--remember the votes on bankruptcy, torture, habeas corpus, etc. Overrides of vetoes are going to be damn rare.

17. At the Rapublicans' peril. People want this stuff. If they vote against the 100-hour
plan, we will make sure it haunts them.

6. He hasn't been at 45% since right after the 9/11 anniversary
...By any poll other than Rasmussen anyway (Rasmussen measures "approve/disapprove" with "somewhat" and "strongly" categories added, which is why he polls higher in Rasmussen polls.)

7. 69% still under some form of repug spell, though
Unbelievably...
Another 69 percent said they were concerned that the new Congress would keep the administration "from doing what is necessary to combat terrorism,"

their minds, no doubt still cloudy from the deluge of propaganda on this point.

8. Oh you mean like the Bush administration failed to stop the 9-11 attacks?
Whenever someone brings up the false to facts notion that the Republicans act strong on terrorism I will stand up and say that 9-11 happened on Bush's watch and that despite the propaganda only the Republican party has actually demonstrated their failure to defend America on 9-11-2001 and that they appears the only ones weak and a failure on terrorism.

9. Sure, that'd be one example
Whatever we can do to deflate this apparently widespread misconception.

A short list off the top of my early morning head:

  • Ignoring Richard Clark and numerous "attack imminent" warnings.
  • Putting Bremmer and other political hacks in charge post "mission accomplished".
  • Disbanding the Iraqi army.
  • Basically disregarding anything which doesn't fit their preconceived notions.

14. You are so right LD. This is such a canard. For that matter,
Clinton kept us safe for 8 years! The only attack on our soil was at the WTC in 1993. Clinton rounded up the perps and they are in jail now. Remember this when these neo-cons bring up "Clinton did nothing."

Oh, a guess who was one of the attorneys prosecuting the 1993 attack? You guessed it, Fitz.

Off topic, but I am on a roll here. Another one I despise is "We have to fight the terrorists over there rather than on our soil. What a bunch of bullshit! First of all, there were no terrorists in Iraq, til we showed up. Do you think SH would have allowed it? Furthermore, I bet the Iraqis are THRILLED with this stupid statement. Sure let them kill Iraqis; they don't count as God's children. :sarcasm:

13. This is why Pelosi is so wise to include implementing 9-11 commission
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 09:34 AM by IndyOp
reforms in her "First 100 Hours" plan...

Day One: Put new rules in place to "break the link between lobbyists and legislation."

Day Two: Enact all the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Time remaining until 100 hours: Raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, maybe in one step. Cut the interest rate on student loans in half. Allow the government to negotiate directly with the pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices for Medicare patients.

Broaden the types of stem cell research allowed with federal funds _ "I hope with a veto-proof majority," she added in an Associated Press interview Thursday.

All the days after that: "Pay as you go," meaning no increasing the deficit, whether the issue is middle class tax relief, health care or some other priority.

To do that, she said, Bush-era tax cuts would have to be rolled back for those above "a certain level." She mentioned annual incomes of $250,000 or $300,000 a year and higher, and said tax rates for those individuals might revert to those of the Clinton era. Details will have to be worked out, she emphasized.

"We believe in the marketplace," Pelosi said of Democrats, then drew a contrast with Republicans. "They have only rewarded wealth, not work."

"We must share the benefits of our wealth" beyond the privileged few, she added.

Pelosi, 66, has been a leader of the House Democrats since 2002. But her political apprenticeship dates to childhood, when her father was mayor of Baltimore.

16. Excellent plan actually
Wonder if it has any chance of shutting-up the tiresome refrain that the Dems lack any clear or specific idea of what to do w/ their mandate.
