Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 09:25 PM by Bicoastal
Being relatively new here, I wanted to get a feel for the demographics.

87. I still remember breaking up with a boyfriend over Nixon.....
I was working and going to college but watched as much of the proceedings as I could and was glued to it in the papers. My then BF thought it was all a bunch of BS and stupid. He thought Nixon was doing a fine job. First breakup due to politics! :P

(Hey, I was young and "in love." I didn't realize he was stupid at the time....I was paying more attention to his ass. Guess I was a little stupid myself. )

to recall the time when it was considered "impolite" to ask one's age. ;)

But this poll would have been quite acceptable, because no one has to state (their age)specifically or personally. Good job!:hi: Isn't it funny how times change and what's acceptable now that once was not?

best,

21. Six more days till 55, and through my personal experience
know how corrupt our government can get. I was 12 when Kennedy was murdered and knew even at that young age that there wasn't a lone gunman. I lived through the lies of the Vietnam War (and protested it) and then there were the Pentagon Papers and Watergate. Our government was behind the killings in Nicarraqua and behind the assassination of Allende in Chile... And who put Saddam Hussein in power???? Then some of this filthy bunch in power had their fingers in Iran Contra...ask why the Shrub owned Barry Seals drug running plane when he was the Gov of Tex and why was Poindexter appointed to DARPA and now Bill Gates. Not to mention Elliot Abrams too. Coldblooded Kissinger and Baker treated like statesman when they are the real evildoers.....

It really all started before I was born and recognized by Ike in his departing speech... beware of the Military Industrial Complex.....

Meanwhile, I was born a Dem and have become more Progressive and cannot stomach the DLC. They are part of the problem..they are opposames to the Repugs.

Really, if you want to do a poll on the ages of DUers, then please do not tie our ages to the different candidates!!!

What is that all about??? I might not want to be tied to the candidate that you have in the poll to certain ages of DUers!

If you want to do a poll of the age of DUers, then do a poll on our age, not on who YOU think they may be tied to politically!!!

And yes, I grew up during the Vietnam and Nixon era. I come from a long line of Democrats. My Nana who was born in 1907 used to talk about politics with me when I was growing up. I remember her telling me that the Republicans were all about business and helping the rich people. She'd say that the Democrats were for "people like us." She was so right.

(and I'm the same age as you). She was an Irish immigrant, born in 1896-1898'ish (lied about her age because she married a younger man, so I don't remember exactly *when* she was born). I distinctly remember her telling me that the Republicans were the party for rich people.

80. a related question that I've been pondering is the median age of . . .
those vehemently calling for "Impeachment NOW!" . . . my hunch is that it's mainly younger DUers, those who weren't around for the civil rights battles, Vietnam, and Watergate . . .

I think that because I was equally vehement when I was younger . . . when Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon to end "our long national nightmare," I was furious . . . it was only through time and experience that I ultimately realized that what Ford did was probably best for the nation, despite how much I hated Nixon . . .

I'm not implying that Bush should be similarly pardoned, because his crimes make Nixon look like a cheap cat burglar . . . I do believe, however, that impeachment is not the way to go . . . some seem to think that impeachment is the ultimate punishment that can be meted out to elected officials, when in reality all it does is (potentially) remove them from office . . . it does nothing to actually punish them for their crimes (e.g. prison time, fines, etc.) . . .

bringing Bush and his cronies before US and international courts would be a far more effective way of ensuring that they pay for their what they've done to this nation and the planet, imho . . .

136. At the time I thought that the pardons were the
best choice too.

But looking at the white house now, and watching that miserable gollum Kissinger haunt the place, and having seen the evil doers of Iran-Contra elevated to "elder statemen" have made me rethink that. If you leave some decay in the tooth, the tooth is doomed. And rust never heals itself either.

And for the record, while I may have "grown up during the Nixon era", I was, like, 9 when they threw the bum out. I don't remember a whole lot except that I voted for McGovern in my second grade mock election and my mother almost threw me out of the house for it.

My husband, 57, is constantly amazed when he brings up someone from that administration and I don't remember the name. Of course, I have to teach him how to use the DVR, download his ringtones and explain netspeak, so we're even. ;)

139. Child of the 80's
Atari, Cabbage Patch Kids, Rocky movies, Bon Jovi, bad, oversprayed hair...ahhhh, the good old 80's. I was born in 1975, I'm 30 years old. I liked Reagan as a child but didn't know any better, I was just a kid and my parents were Repubs. I rebelled and grew up liberal when Clinton and Gore were elected in 1992. I liked Bill but loved Al. Voted Clinton 96, Gore 00 and Kerry 04. Found the Daily Show and Kieth O. a couple of years ago. My parents watch Fox News and I tried to watch it once...eccch! So utterly boring and idiotic. Discovered Dem Underground two years ago. Been a longtime lurker and just started posting recently. I have two daughters, ages one and two. I hope they grow up with a Democratic president. Thankfully they will have no memories of the Chimp!
