Bitch Slapping Dick Cheney - by Larry C Johnson
Bitch Slapping Dick Cheney
by
Larry C Johnson

Wednesday's surprising resignation/firing of Don Rumsfeld and the nomination of the CIA chief who served Bush 41, Robert Gates, was a dramatic and emphatic smack in the face of Dick Cheney. While George W. Bush remains stubbornly committed to the present course in Iraq, there should be no doubt that he is no longer willing to be the Charlie McCarthy to Cheney's Edgar Bergen. Cheney's hand is no longer firmly up Bush's ass and Bush is speaking for himself.

This was a stinging rebuke to Cheney, who had brought his mentor, Don Rumsfeld, into the Bush 43 tent over the strenuous objections of the Bush 41 crowd. Cheney and Rumsfeld shared the same world view of the NeoCon crowd, which included a fierce distrust and anger toward the CIA. During the last five years Cheney assisted Rumsfeld's quest to set up a completely independent intelligence operation in the Department of Defense. At least with the DOD intel capability, the Pentagon and the White House could ignore the CIA view.

2. Those ol' coots may make a difference, after all.
Isn't it kinda sad that Daddy has to come in and let The Kid know the friends he's picked are bad for him to run around and be seen with? Be careful of the company you keep kinda stuff from childhood.

Too bad the whole world had to suffer for 43's 2nd childhood.

7. "Bush is speaking for himself"??? I highly doubt that.
He is merely being reined in by Poppy's guys. Junior is an inveterate fuck-up who, throughout his entire life, has always had to be eventually bailed out by Dad and Dad's homies.

The idiot Decider has done decided his last decision, the grownups are taking charge.

8. Gates has proven that he is willing to lie and 'cook the books' for
an agenda that he supports. But then again, there is absolutely NO WAY that anyone could/would be any worse than Donald Rumsfeld (with the backing of his bloody fingered friend Dick Cheney). The two of them belong in a cell until their trials.

10. He thinks Cheney will resign? Would it be V.P. McCain?
I'm just expecting that the BushCo's are going to try to have an incumbent V.P. to run as president so they can have an advantage in the next election. I'm hoping that isn't the deal that McCain cut with bush during the summer of '04.

14. McCain? No way.
I think they'll do the same thing they did with Ashcroft and appoint someone who just lost an election.

Ladies and gentleman, your new Vice-President, George Felix Allen. Or perhaps Jim Talent to continue the Missouri connection.

12. Geez...I knew the psycho-in-chief was SLOW, but it took him this long to figure
out that he was Cheney's puppet? I really doubt it. The psycho knew what was going on and WELCOMED Cheney to be his master because he doesn't know jack shit about what he's doing. Once again, poppy to the rescue. Gotta bail the kid out again!

<snip>
the era of Cheney's supremacy at the White House is done. The neocons are discredited, as is Cheney, and their pet projects--from warrantless wiretapping to torture to trashing habeus corpus--are dead as well.

THANK G-D!!!! That is so goos to hear.

13. Wait, so the spooks are the better option here?
You know, it's a little sad when people are enthused about a Bush 41 CIA Iran-Contra goon heading a Cabinet department because he was better than the last guy.

At least when the Army's in Venezuela, it won't take them as long to come home on leave...That's a plus...I guess???

James Baker's Double Life: A Special Investigation
Naomi Klein

When President Bush appointed former Secretary of State James Baker III as his envoy on Iraq's debt on December 5, 2003, he called Baker's job "a noble mission." At the time, there was widespread concern about whether Baker's extensive business dealings in the Middle East would compromise that mission, which is to meet with heads of state and persuade them to forgive the debts owed to them by Iraq. Of particular concern was his relationship with merchant bank and defense contractor the Carlyle Group, where Baker is senior counselor and an equity partner with an estimated $180 million stake.

Until now, there has been no concrete evidence that Baker's loyalties are split, or that his power as Special Presidential Envoy--an unpaid position--has been used to benefit any of his corporate clients or employers. But according to documents obtained by The Nation, that is precisely what has happened. Carlyle has sought to secure an extraordinary $1 billion investment from the Kuwaiti government, with Baker's influence as debt envoy being used as a crucial lever.

The secret deal involves a complex transaction to transfer ownership of as much as $57 billion in unpaid Iraqi debts. The debts, now owed to the government of Kuwait, would be assigned to a foundation created and controlled by a consortium in which the key players are the Carlyle Group, the Albright Group (headed by another former Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright) and several other well-connected firms. Under the deal, the government of Kuwait would also give the consortium $2 billion up front to invest in a private equity fund devised by the consortium, with half of it going to Carlyle.

SNIP:

The goal of maximizing Iraq's debt payments directly contradicts the US foreign policy aim of drastically reducing Iraq's debt burden. According to Kathleen Clark, a law professor at Washington University and a leading expert on government ethics and regulations, this means that Baker is in a "classic conflict of interest. Baker is on two sides of this transaction: He is supposed to be representing the interests of the United States, but he is also a senior counselor at Carlyle, and Carlyle wants to get paid to help Kuwait recover its debts from Iraq." After examining the documents, Clark called them "extraordinary." She said, "Carlyle and the other companies are exploiting Baker's current position to try to land a deal with Kuwait that would undermine the interests of the US government."

The Nation also showed the documents to Jerome Levinson, an international lawyer and expert on political and corporate corruption at American University. He called it "one of the greatest cons of all time. The consortium is saying to the Kuwaiti government, 'Through us, you have the only chance to realize a substantial part of the debt. Why? Because of who we are and who we know.' It's influence peddling of the crassest kind."
