Anyone who thinks McCain would be a good president should re-read this
The Right's Man
By Paul Krugman
The New York Times

Monday 13 March 2006

It's time for some straight talk about John McCain. He isn't a moderate. He's much less of a maverick than you'd think. And he isn't the straight talker he claims to be. Mr. McCain's reputation as a moderate may be based on his former opposition to the Bush tax cuts. In 2001 he declared, "I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us."

But now - at a time of huge budget deficits and an expensive war, when the case against tax cuts for the rich is even stronger - Mr. McCain is happy to shower benefits on the most fortunate. He recently voted to extend tax cuts on dividends and capital gains, an action that will worsen the budget deficit while mainly benefiting people with very high incomes.

When it comes to foreign policy, Mr. McCain was never moderate. During the 2000 campaign he called for a policy of "rogue state rollback," anticipating the "Bush doctrine" of pre-emptive war unveiled two years later. Mr. McCain called for a systematic effort to overthrow nasty regimes even if they posed no imminent threat to the United States; he singled out Iraq, Libya and North Korea. Mr. McCain's aggressive views on foreign policy, and his expressed willingness, almost eagerness, to commit U.S. ground forces overseas, explain why he, not George W. Bush, was the favored candidate of neoconservative pundits such as William Kristol of The Weekly Standard.

<snip>

When it comes to social issues, Mr. McCain, who once called Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell "agents of intolerance," met with Mr. Falwell late last year. Perhaps as a result, he is now taking positions friendly to the religious right. Most notably, Mr. McCain's spokesperson says that he would have signed South Dakota's extremist new anti-abortion law.

5. I am mainly thinking about
how hard our folks are going to work to support the Dem candidate for president.

If McCain is viewed as "not so bad" then it could sap the drive of Democrats to give this race everything they've got.

I know several Democrats who have told me they think McCain is a good guy. Maybe he was at one time, but people should be widely aware that McCain has taken a hard right turn.

7. Bush leading us to "unconditional victory"
Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 01:37 PM by TexasLawyer

President Bush and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) appear at a rally
with 6,000 soldiers in Fort Lewis, Wash. In introducing the president,
McCain said, "He has led this country . . . with firm resolve to
achieve unconditional victory."

Bush, McCain Look Beyond Differences
In Appearance at Washington Army Base, Republicans Rally Veterans' Support

By Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, June 19, 2004

<snip>

McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam for more than five years, took the microphone and spoke emotionally of the "miserable business" of war and "the sublime love of those who sacrifice everything on our behalf" as he recognized two soldiers from the base who were lost in the war on terrorism.

Bush has a strict rule that his introductions last only one minute. McCain went on for eight, but no one from the White House was complaining. "The man I introduce to you today understands all this and understands it very, very well," McCain said. "He heard the call to action on that terrible morning in September and summoned the rest of us to this long and difficult task. He has led this country with moral clarity about the stakes involved and with firm resolve to achieve unconditional victory."

Noting "ups and downs, as there are in any war" and never saying Bush's name, McCain called it "a great privilege to introduce to you your commander in chief."

Bush reciprocated, calling it "a privilege to be introduced to our men and women in uniform by a man who brought such credit to the uniform."

10. Shilling for Bush-- Bush Cheney ’04 Ad:
Bush Cheney ’04 Ad:

“First Choice”

Sen. McCain: It's a big thing this war.

It's a fight between right and wrong, good and evil.

And should our enemies acquire for their arsenal the chemical,
biological and nuclear weapons they seek, this war will become
an even bigger thing.

It will become a fight for our survival.

America is under attack by depraved enemies who oppose our every
interest and hate every value we hold dear.

It is the great test of our generation and he has led with great
moral clarity and firm resolve. He has not wavered, he has not
flinched from the hard choices, he was determined and remains
determined to make this world a better, safer, freer place.
He deserves not only our support but our admiration. That's
why I am honored to introduce to you the President of the
United States , George W. Bush.

Bush: I'm George W. Bush and I approve this message.

15. Promotes the connection between 9/11 and Iraq
Beyond the pure shilling and brown-nosing going on with this speech, McCain is also promoting the 9/11-Iraq lie.

Bush "heard the call" on that September morning, then led us into battle in Iraq. This guy is full of garbage.

I honor THE MAN for his bravery and service, even in an unpopular war. I reject THE POLITICIAN for reducing that service to a campaign talking point.

12. he seems nice on ALL those PSAs he gets on TV and he has an honest face...
Money can't buy the benevolent image that ALL those FREE PSAs on TV has given him. Do you think they'll heavy up the free publicity over the next two years?

Now look at this face... honest looking isn't he?
