With Democrats winning control of the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-10, is in a position to become chairman of the powerful Subcommittee on National Security, Veterans Affairs and International Relations.
Kucinich, the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee where foreign policy legislation is generated, is likely to play a much larger role on everything from the nation's policies on fighting terrorism to the war in Iraq.
The six-term congressman has sought the recall of troops from Iraq and says the Bush administration's anti-terrorism policies are eroding civil liberties.
Yet, Kucinich wasn't ready to assume he would gain the subcommittee's chairmanship.
"I'm happy to play whatever role I can to help," he said. "America's role in the world needs to be defined so that we're not at war with a large part of the world."
Kucinich defeated Republican challenger Mike Dovilla, getting 125,448 votes (66.4 percent) votes to 63,477 (33.6 percent) for Dovilla, according to final, unofficial results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.
In an interview late Tuesday, he emphasized that his domestic agenda wouldn't get lost amid whatever foreign policy role he would get.
