46% of Evangelicals think Clinton was as good a Christian, or better, than Bush

A new survey of evangelical Christians. Some interesting points:

Over 52 percent still felt Bush was a better Christian than former Democratic President Bill Clinton, while 13 percent felt the reverse was true. About a third rated them evenly.

52% thought Bush was a bitter Christian than Clinton. Okay, but about a third, 33% or so, thought they were even, and 13% thought Clinton was a better Christian than Bush. Combined, that means 46% of evangelicals thought Clinton was as good a Christian, or better, than Bush. That's interesting.

Oh yeah, and they can't stand Jerry Falwell, who keeps claiming he's one of their leaders.
Among Christian leaders, evangelist Billy Graham -- a household name in America who has long distanced himself from overt political activity -- was viewed favorably by 86 percent of the evangelicals polled by Beliefnet.

The Rev. Jerry Falwell, a prominent conservative Christian, was viewed in a favorable light by only 17 percent.

4. Let's see what they think a year from now about Bush.
The Religious Division of the Republican Party has managed to keep the veneer of morality applied to Bush. We know that's a complete lie. Soon, they will know it too.

5. Why they think that..
Clinton did not WEAR his religion like a shroud. He readily admitted he had faults and I don;t recall him preaching to people..

12. What's the ethnic/racial breakdown on that?
White evangelicals vote way different than Black/Latino evangelicals.

13. 46% of what? 46% of 771 respondants on the internet. (Beliefnet.)
They're never going to go away, and they're never going to get any smarter.

And it is a dumb survey, when it comes up with sentences like this:

"As with other Americans, the Iraq war topped evangelicals' list of electoral concerns, with 22.5 percent citing it as the issue that most affected their votes."

Respondents were not asked to specify if Iraq was a negative or positive factor, so some who cited it may have voted in support of Bush's Iraq policies. Other surveys have found white evangelical support for the unpopular war to be higher than among other Americans.

Abortion and gay marriage/homosexuality were second and third among evangelicals' electoral concerns, cited by 16 percent and 10.7 percent respectively.

The survey found a general disenchantment with politics among devout evangelicals, with 51.5 percent also saying their views of Democrats had soured in recent years.

"There has been some movement away from the Republicans but it is by no means a stampede of evangelicals toward the Democrats," Waldman said.

14. Hilarious Freudian slip, KPete --- Bush is the "bitter" Christian.
I'm sure the poll was talking about better or worse but I like yours better.

Clinton signed a law to address the lysteria bacteria issue in industries like meat packing and poultry processing plants at the end of his term on the way out the door, trying to do one more good thing as he left.

Bush stomped on it so some mother fed her 6 year old son infected meat and it ate his brain like a mad cow disease in humans, literally liquified it. WHY? So he could pay back the political favors he got from his poultry buddies.

Yeah, after I got done crying my eyes out over that one, I think I really had to agree that Clinton getting a bj in the oval office didn't compare. After all, there are only a few unforgivable sins and in my mind *ush might as well have carved that kid up on the altar of political favortism himself for as responsible as he is for his death.

18. A majority of evangelicals should be consistantly voting Democratic.
Democratic principles of helping one another are closer to Repug principles of take from everyone else and protect your own.

19. were it not for concerns about abortion and gay rights
that would be true.

The truth of the matter is that if you can sell evangelicals on the argument that the role of the Christian is to focuse on individal salvation rather than public policy, they would be democrats.
