Glass ballot box and paper......................
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 06:14 PM by Rochambeau
Forgive me fellow DUers I don't have any lessons to give you, specifically from another country, which has its own difficulties by the way, but again, I CAN'T understand...
After 2000, 2004 the same song again about your difficulties, incredible technical difficulties, to organize a decent democratic poll.
I remember President Carter helping devastated countries a very succesful way to step into democracy and when it comes to your own, that pathetic spectacle.
I can't understand why you can't give the boot to all those bullshit and turn back to the good old glass ballot box and ballot paper like in every other democratic developped country ?
Sorry again if I seem arrogant but I'm UPSET !

EDIT : no signature so I must tell you that I m French.

1. Our system is decentralized. States administer the election process, not the federal gov't
As a result, standards are inconsistent, and progress in one state may be matched with negligence or incompetence in another state. Then there's corruption. Corruption is a different beast altogether, and a good part of that is because we have no effective public financing mechanism. This means the richest have a distinct advantage when it comes to influencing candidates and winning races.

An election system where politicians must solicit private donations is an election system that favors those who have the most money.

2. We are trying to figure it out too. Hackable voting machines manufactured
by cronies of the republican party are part of the problem.

Believe me, this is extremely discouraging for us. But the more people across the world speak out the more it will help us.

It is embarrassing and humiliating that our voting system has been corrupted.

3. The people with the money control EVERYTHING.
We do not have the power to decide what machines are being used unless we rise up en masse. That has not happened. It took this long to get "normal" people to realize that the machines could really be hacked. Other people are so busy just trying to make ends meet, that they don't have time to pay attention to things like this. (Of course I think the should make time, but you can't tell someone how to live their life-that's what necons want to do). The power has been systematically weaned away, bit by bit, and most did not realize it. They keep us down by eliminating the middle class and keeping the poor desparate. The most devestating thing has been the media spreading the horrible propaganda about those in power and the war. They know how to play us like a fiddle, and many have not woken up yet. Those who have are on this website. We are doing the best we can, we promise. We will try to do better.
