You'd think he'd live somewhere where there are a lot of other millionnaires, but Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin is solidly middle and upper middle class. We had volunteers out there covering 10-15 wards this weekend. Bryan Kennedy has knocked doors all over town and I could tell by the patches of Kennedy yard signs where he had been. Kennedy even went to Sensenbrenner's neighborhood to talk to potential voters.
Its not that James Sensenbrenner is actually popular, its more that a lot of people in the district are stupidly Republican. We have a good Dem governor, and the Republican running against him (Congressman Mark Green) is an asshole who votes with Bush more than 90% of the time. Even though Bush popularity is down, I am not sure if the voters here are smart enough to make the connection. For that matter, Sensenbrenner is a Bush rubber stamp, and I'm not sure if the voters here are smart enough to do the math.
One lady asked what "persuasion" my candidate was, and when I said Democrat, she said "You can keep going". Middle class neighborhood with very modest homes- gee do they think voting Republican will make them rich or get them into heaven?
We need these voters, though. We need some Republicans to stay home on Tuesday or come out and vote for Bryan Kennedy. I feel like I am accomplishing more going to these neighborhoods instead of staying in heavily Democratic Madison, and by the time I get home I am ready to shower off the Republican air that clings...
