Who do you love, Southern Virginia?!
The same day that Sen. George Allen’s (R-Va.) supporters and staff attacked a law student at an Allen campaign event, U.S. Senate candidate Jim Webb (D) was marching in picket-line solidarity with striking United Steelworkers (USW) union members in Danville, Va.<snip>
While Webb threw his support to the USW members, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Allen hasn’t been to the picket line to back the workers. Local 831 spokesperson Dana Dixon told us this morning that
the last time Goodyear workers struck, 1997, Allen called their action “moronic.”, to me that’s the same thing as calling us a bunch of morons.Allen made that insult at a legislative workforce development committee meeting, according to the
Danville Register & Bee. Scot McKenzie, who has worked at Goodyear for nine years, told the paper,
"Anybody willing to call an American worker a moron doesn’t deserve to hold a public office."<snip>
The Southern Virginia area is a traditional Republican stronghold, but Webb’s appearance with the striking workers may sway some voters. Shelia Baynes, whose husband Larry is an electrician at the Goodyear plant, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch, "I think a lot of strikers will go to the polls and vote for Jim Webb and
Al Weed, because they are supporting us vocally and with their presence here, and the other two candidates have not. These people are energized to turn out the vote." Gee, maybe Allen can just ask his goons to go down there and
"knock their soft teeth down their whining throats" - a practice he encourages right in this video.
