Why does it take YEARS to get a dead person off the voting rolls?
Edited on Tue Oct-31-06 05:27 PM by SoCalDem
Every death is accompanied by a death certificate.. Why isn't it routine to fax copies of death certificates of all people over 18 who die..every MONTH?..faxed to the registrars' office.

This whole registration bugaboo is the biggest fly in the ointment, folks.

Voting should be AUTOMATIC.. It's a RIGHT !!

When someone turns 18, they should automatically receive a voter ID card. It should be valid in ANY state..

It should be part of the naturalization process and the parole process too. (unless someone was convicted of election fraud..they should lose their rights indefinitely)

If someone wants to vote in a new area for the first time, all they should have to do is prove they have lived there for the required time..electric/gas/rent/mortgage payments for the number of months/days/weeks should suffice..

The degree of difficulty is what's wrong here..

6. It doesn't usually take long. But if they die in another county or state
they may not get purged back at the location they're registered.

And, Social Security numbers can be wrong and names can be cuplicated. Our Election Administrator was surprised recently to see hir neighbor listed to be purged from the files because of her death. It turned out to be a mistake but it took some digging to find out what happened.

Really, people get purged from the rolls very promptly most of the time.

Where they reside is not necessarily where they're registered to vote. Where they die is not necessarily where they reside OR where they're registered to vote.

If a person has not voted for several cycles in TN, they are moved to Inactive Status. They are not purged until there is official confirmation of their death.

2. pretty amazing, isn't it? only takes a few DAYS in Ohio or Florida.
all you have to do is fail to respond to a letter from the Sec. of state, or be wrongly purged by Choicepoint

4. My mother died this year
I didn't even think about it--just assumed she would be removed. The registrar send a letter before the June primaries asking her to come in and verify her address and signature.

My guess is they got the death certificate and were just being thorough to make sure no one else (like me) voted in her name. But this is California not Ohio or Florida.

8. Oh no...are you watching CNN?
They've been heavily -- HEAVILY -- beating the "lots of dead voters, mostly democrats, still on the rolls!" Not once during Wolfie's show, but at least three separate times during his broadcast he repeated the same story about all the dead voters in New York.

How many of these things are we going to allow them to set us up with? They're pulling out all the stops to turn the tables and get their whiny-assed sniveling idiot base to believe that Dems are the cheaters and will be stealing the elections.

DON'T FALL FOR IT!

9. I'm not "falling" for it, but as long as there's no
automatic accounting for people who have passed on, this will always be there for them to grab onto..every stinking election..:grr:

10. How do you accomplish that, though?
RFID tags embedded in everyone that radio back to the government if someone drops dead? Not everyone has family members who call obits in to the local paper and handle "the arrangements." Some people die completely alone, with very little record of their existence. There are 300,000,000 people in America, and we simply cannot expect everyone to die under the most convenient circumstances. Hell, you can't get the post office to handle a Forwarding Address properly when you move across town. Sure, we need to strive for more accuracy, but the message here, perhaps, is that our "Brazil"-like system needs streamlining, more efficiency, not more government bloat, which is what we've gotten under the GOP.
