4. Great video but I have a question....
What is he referring to when he sings about throwing her in the water? It was powerful even though I didn't get that part. Saw Kris many years ago at Theater in the Round, down in Connecticut. Have loved him ever since.

5. I think he is referring to the constant focus on crime by our media
Maybe that is a reference to Lacy Peterson?

7. Could very well be but..
What does that have to do with Bush. Maybe I'm just dense.

10. It's about what the media SHOULD be telling us
and what they choose to tell us. bush has gotten a free ride, because they are cramming Lacy Peterson down our throats. At least that is my take on it.

8. That doesn't make sense to me... unless he is
trying to make a parallel between Scott's behavior and Bush's.

11.  The video is called "In The News", isn't it?
I think he was talking about what had been in the news at the time that he wrote it maybe?

12. I don't think it's a direct parallel he's making,
as much as it is he's decrying the current state of meanness in the world. Scott Peterson and George Bush are perfect examples.

By the way, the rest of Kristofferson's CD is just as good. Go buy it.

22. He's talking about how the media no longer can focus on what is most important
Of course a murder is important, but while the media was giving Peterson, Jonbenet, and Michael Jackson 24 hour coverage that provided no useful information, matters more consequential by many orders of maginitude were simply ignored.

The key is the last line of that stanza, "A little piece of truth and beauty died."

Remember this guy is a Rhodes Scholar. While he can talk "to the people" so to speak, his mind works on many levels at once. That line is ovbiously talking about Peterson's death, but Kristofferson is also saying that by obsessing on these slimy news stories, we are failing to report on the death of America -- maybe the death of our planet. Thus the other meaning of "A little piece of truth and beauty died.". It dies every time we let the big criminals go unaccountable because we obsess on the little criminals.
