Who here on DU doesn't know someone who wouldn't benefit from
stem cell research - yet? Is it you, your son, daughter, mom, dad, spouse, etc., etc.
The whole issue is a hollow one. We watch men and women die, but simple cells are forbidden to
be used to benefit mankind?

1. in my case it's me that would benefit
many other family members have already passed

i guess i don't care about the hurt feelings of some random cells that would be thrown in the garbage anyway

3. So, are you pro- or anti- the research that would help others, being
a human and hopefully a humanitarian?

4. It's all so outrageous
The RW will fight to keep a dead woman hooked up to machines for another 15 years or more. They'll decry abortion of an embryo or use of it for stem-cell research but say nothing of the many thousands that are destroyed every year through IVF.

They claim to care about life, yet let millions suffer and die for the sake of mere clusters of cells (and they aren't even consistent about that).

And my sister has MS so she could benefit from stem-cell research. Even if that were not the case I would be in favor of it. In fact I was in favor of it before I found out she had the disease.

5. I know I would....
I have been coughing up blood for the last day and a half and I know that I will face a lung transplant sooner than later... I would have loved to go into it with my genetic code incorporated into the donor lung so that I would have more than a figting chance to live beyond five years...

8. WCGreen, are you in a lot of pain?
This makes me so angry! You must have insurance if you are considering a lung transplant.
Why oh why are we being so dumb about this?
I've said it before, I have a stepson who might die around 50, he's 36, has 3 kids, his body
has just about failed him, but his mind is sharp. His nemesis is called Friedrichs Ataxia, very rare, and no cure (w/o stem cell research at the least).

9. Right now... Yes...
But it comes and goes...

I am so sorry about your stepson...

I have a chance... And insurance... I do hope they get off their asses soon...

6. My only regret
is that those who oppose Stem Cell research would also be beneficiaries of that research, if the research was ever allowed to flourish.

Everyone would benefit. I cannot think of a health research area which would not be helped by stem cell research.

7. The fact that we cannot use these frozen embryos for
research and new stem cell lines makes me furious!

So much waste.......and so many good people dying because of this waste...

And yes, I know some people right here on DU who would benefit enormously from having stem cells work for them........

People whose contributions are enormous, and whose lives have already made a huge difference to many others.

10. Hi, CA Peggy. I know what you mean and it
infuriates me as well.
Soldiers dying in Iraq are fair game, but cells aren't? I'm speechless because of the ignorance, but not being religious, I'm trying to be circumspect. It's not working that well.

11. The father of one of my best friends in high school has Parkinson's.
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 01:14 AM by Wonk
He's worse off than Michael J Fox at this point, too. His tremors are worse than Fox had in that commercial on a good day. Some days he can't even speak. His body is out of control, which (understandably) leaves him pretty darn depressed most of the time too. To top it off, my friend's wife just got diagnosed with MS a few months ago. Needless to say, this friend is very in favor of more stem cell research, in hopes of curing his dad and his wife. So am I.

13. I'm 50 years old, and one of my high school chums has had
M.S. since our 20th reunion and/or before, but I had no clue. She's been immobile for the past few years but she has a loving family to care for her. I can't imagine being in that situation, especially when a cure 'might be' available. Why aren't we looking for it?
I also met a man years ago with Parkinson's, and I know MJFox wasn't kidding.
It astonishes me that this is even an issue.

12. i might benefit from it next year, in 5 years, in 20 years
NOBODY knows when they might get a disease. To think you will never get one is total and utter foolishness. Yet thats exactly what the Rush supporters are saying.

14. No, I think Rush is saying it and his supporting sheeple are just going
along with it. Can you imagine not having an opinion or point of view? Seems kind of boring to me.

16. My 5 month old grandson would probably benefit from stem
cell research. He was just diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, this means he will be a brain in a wheelchair. And now their cutting funds for motorized wheelchairs, he probably be able to get one when he needs one. Their is nothing fair about how this country treats it's sick and broke. Color me PISSED.

I've been for stem cell research before this ever came up. Now it's just that much more important.

17. It could easily be a lifesaver for me, an enormous benefit for my partner
and a godsend to various younger relatives and friends. What an odd world where we sentence people to die when they could easily be saved. How very, very sad.
