Patricia Heaton: Not Everyone Loves Michael J. Fox
Patricia Heaton: Not Everyone Loves Michael J. Fox
Thursday, October 26, 2006

By Roger Friedman

snip...
Heaton is now appearing in a commercial intended to persuade Missouri voters to vote against Amendment 2 on their ballot.

snip...
Heaton’s costars in the commercial are Jim Caviezel, who starred as Jesus in "The Passion of the Christ," and three Missouri sports stars — St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jeff Suppan, former St. Louis Rams quarterback Kurt Warner (now with the Arizona Cardinals) and Kansas City Royals designated hitter Mike Sweeney.

snip...
But it’s what Fox has done with his illness that is most impressive. Since 2001, according to federal records, his Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research has raised an astonishing $80 million for research. Unlike most celebrity charities, the Fox Foundation has a Web site that even links to its most recent federal tax filing, and the filing is current.

This is an amazing achievement, considering how young the foundation is. Fox has turned his illness into something incredibly positive; the group even runs in the black, meaning its income is greater than its expenses. Last year the group finished with $7 million in the bank after giving away $17 million.

snip...
Heaton has been a relatively unknown political ideologist to most of her fans. My guess is they will be surprised to learn about her as she attacks Fox and repudiates his claims.

Six months ago I reported that Heaton — who then was campaigning to join ABC’s talk show "The View" as a correspondent — was honorary chairwoman of the group Feminists for Life. Jane Roberts, wife of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, is a consultant. Their slogan is "Refuse to Choose."

I can't stand the woman. "Raymond" is damned funny, but she makes my skin crawl since I've heard some of her hateful ranting.

25. I have hated her ever since those Albertson's ads started
running! I have never watched "Everybody Loves Raymond" and didn't hear of her political leanings until very recently, but she has annoyed hell out of me for a LONG time.

What a shrew.

72. I couldn't stand her since the Terri Shiavo thing
She had no business injecting her ignorant rants into Michael Schiavo's business. He did all he could for his wife for years until it was clear she had no chance of any recovery. Then he gets Patricia Heaton judging him and ranting about things she knows nothing about.

90. I LOATHED her in "Raymond"
Even before I knew she was a Bushbot. I thought her character was a manipulative, schemeing bitch.

And her use of sex to cajole and discipline Raymond I found disturbing.

Not to mention that she had the acting range of a lobotomized accountant.

Seems fitting somehow.

3. Ya don't have to love him to support his position on stem cell
research.

For me, the point is that the Bush administration is notoriously anti-Science.

Stem cell research should be encouraged, endorsed, and paid for in the hope of finding cures for various afflictions and diseases.

This Heaton person is rubbing a lot of pro-Science people the wrong way.

I hope the Fox ad is in the next generation's History texts as emblematic of the depth and breadth of voters' objections to the Bush administration.

... in casting her as "the wife" in his sitcom. She's the perfect humorless foil - a straight man natural, devoid of humor or flexibility. She's just roadkill on the comedy superhighway - a home to the fast cars of Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, and Brad Garrett.

6. Who says you have to love the guy?
All he's asking for is the chance to avoid being condemned to a potentially avoidable hell -- like millions of his fellow human beings with Parkinsons.

Sure he's using his celebrity (as are the sports figures appearing in the counter-ad). But what the hell good is celebrity if you don't use it?

24. Exactly
It's like when celebrities talk about 9/11 and question that too. As Alex Jones said the celebrities aren't adding more of a viable voice to the movement because there are people who are scientists and things like that already involved but their voices are adding it more publically and getting more people to at least listen. Same thing with Fox and Parkinson's. He puts a personal face to the disease and he's trying to help people who couldn't pay for the research. It seems to me that Heaton is the only one here selfish and Alito's wife.

19. How many people here have actually watched the Heaton ad?
This headline is completely misleading (well, it is from FOX); Patricia Heaton doesn't mention Michael J. Fox at all in the ad! Neither do the other speakers in the ad. They attack the proposed bill, and make some dubious claims concerning its constitutionality, as well as some other things; but there's no mention, let alone any attack, of Michael J. Fox.

I'm on Fox's side of this: pass Amendment 2. But I'm also on the side of accurate reporting.

The problem I have with the ad is that celebrities were used as spokesmen, not because they have credentials in research or constitutional law, but for the sake of countering another celebrity -- who happens to have a disease that could benefit from stem cell research.

22. They're all disgusting
Whatever happened to the phrase "compassionate conservative"? I thought they were supposed to care about people. Obviously not with them attacking Fox and at the same time people with parkinson's disease. All of them are disgusting. I wish they had to do nothing but for one day care for someone who had Parkinson's or Alzhimer's who was worse off than Fox and let them see the reality of the disease. And everyone here I think knows when a cure is found with the help of stem cell research they will be the first to try to get the cure and jump in front of everyone else for it. Feminists for life and their slogan is "refuse to choose"?? Clearly they don't get it. Isn't the whole point of the feminist movement to have choices out there for women to make with their lives such as to vote? To go to work or stay home? These bitches want to take us back to the 50's. Well hey newsflash for Heaton: if we were in the 50's she wouldn't be doing shit. She wouldn't even have her "career" or be on this political group.

I am a case in point. Leaving aside that I have a disease that is incompatible with pregnancy (and complete kidney failure/death is not "unplanned joy"), I knew years before I was diagnosed that I didn't want children. - and I'm financially stable. There's NO amount of money, governesses, material goods, whatever that would make me want to go through pregnancy, childbirth and/or motherhood with or without the very real risk of death in my case. Why don't people get it? Woman does not equal mother! (Not you, FSC - people in general).

Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 12:17 PM by enki23
that they feel they can go after someone who is fighting for a controversial kind of research and therapy in an effort to save himself, and others, from a terrible, debilitating diease. that they can say of this person that he's "using" his illness. "using" his illness. just think about that for a minute. that's like accusing disabled veterans of "using" their disabilities to get government handouts. it's like accusing people dying of AIDS in africa of "using" their disease, and their deaths, to hurt pharmaceutical companies when they pushed for cheaper AIDS drugs.

these republican operatives are shameless, sick bastards. and i don't think they even realize how they might look to decent, sane human beings.

the problem is, the nation is so jaded to this shit it seems we've precious few decent, sane people left.

30. Dear Ms. Heaton,
Disease doesn't care what your political affiliation is. It doesn't care if your male, female, white, black, Hispanic, gay, straight, celebate, rich, or destitute.

People like you, who claim to be part of some "culture of life" have said that MY life is not worth saving. MY suffering is not worth alleviating. The six miscarriages I suffered were not even worth preventing.

To you, a microscopic blob of cells is worth more than my life. The things I have given back to the world, my wonderful son who is a college Sophomore at 17, my wonderful husband, my friends, don't deserve to have me in their lives healthy and happy. "SAVE THE BLOB!"

You may think you have a lock on G-d's desires/wishes/thoughts and that your rectitude is beyond questioning. That kind of hubris lands people in hell.

Hopefully, your hell won't be the kind I am living. You won't have to wonder every night when you go to bed if you're going to wake up. You won't be wracked with constant, debilitating pain. You won't go months at a time eating pureed soups and babyfood because your digestive tract is too paralyzed for anything else. You won't have to plan your day around whether or not you'll have enough energy to both shower AND dress.

Science has answers for living, breathing, human beings. What a marvelous world this would be if people actually cared about.....people.

63. Please send your marvelous letter to Ms. Heaton and her management
>You may think you have a lock on G-d's desires/wishes/thoughts and that your rectitude is beyond questioning.<

Isn't this the truth?

In the meantime, people live with suffering daily because of the lack of humanity in people like Patricia Heaton. I wonder how she'd react if she was actually faced with a flesh and blood person who actually suffers because of her political and personal stances.

32. However, if stem cells were needed for plastic surgery
Heaton's view would change in an instant.
She's had extensive work done, which she's been very open about - to the extent she committed Hollywood suicide. (like this commercial is helping her career).
She outed Michelle Pfieffer. She committed a Hollywood sin - a taboo. She loudly bragged that she went to the same plastic surgeon as Michelle. First, you're not supposed to tell. Second, Michelle's husband is a Hollywood biggie.
So. This is all Heaton has these days. Her big mouth and big ego keep landing her in career hell.
I have no idea if she has any talent or not. I've never seen her in anything. And guessing I never will.

If my face were on display on giant movie screens (or home theaters with HD), you bet I'd have "work" done. Especially considering the roles available for "older" women.

I watch more cable than local channels, and the local channels I watch are usually from Peoria (I get both Peoria and Chicago local channels). I saw lots of Heaton this summer, and I always chuckle when I see her in the same commercials as I did in Iowa--only in Iowa they were for Albertson's, and here they're Jewel.

I didn't know Supervalue bought Albertson's. I have two cousins who work for Supervalue, one as a trucker and one a dispatcher.

... for the most part, in her role as Raymond's wife on TV. Mostly cranky. Highly manipulative. Just generally an unpleasant and intolerant "partner" to her television husband.

It's been my belief that for most actors, there is far more of their personality involved than there is any art in the execution of their craft. She proves the point irrespective of the undeserved Emmys.

81. I've heard of "Feminists" for Life.
I haven't heard this "refuse to choose" bit. Which is basically saying, let other take control of your body and your life. And there is nothing feminist about that, stupid twits. Do I have to explain it to them as if they're four? The idea behind feminism is that women should have choices: whether or not to be a parent and when; whether or not to work outside the home; where they live, etc.

So they believe that stem cell research destroys a human life. What about the human lives being destroyed by debilitating diseases? What about actual human suffering? I mean, these embryos are not going to be implanted in anyone's uterus to become a human being; they're going to be trashed. And if you are so concerned about blobs of cells, what about all the animals in research labs who are also suffering in the name of science. Shouldn't they merit concern? After all, unlike embryos, these animals do feel pain.

And an unplanned pregnancy can be unplanned joy? Hmmm.... or :grr:? or :grr:? or :grr:? or :grr:? I am not sure which reaction to have. The Faux-Feminists for Fetal Life are so fucking clueless, that's for sure. Not everyone has the physical, emotional, and financial resources to be a good parent. And maybe if they weren't against contraception, there would be fewer unplanned pregnancies! Sheesh.

...so why are we listening to her opinion as a so-called 'celebrity'??

I think anyone who would join a group called 'refuse to choose' would be very unhappy living in the land of opportunities and choices, which is what a democracy is all about.

The duplicity and hypocrisy of people like her is what is fueling the 'dumbing down' of members of this democracy, and falls right in line with the rightwing conservative fundamentalist thinking that "a 'leader' tells me everything I need to know and I don't have to think for myself."

113. Show me one peer reviewed article
proving you can create an insulin producing beta cell from an adult stem cell.

Just one.

115. insulin..
You would not want ot produce an insulin producing beta cell as the body's immune system would destroy it. Use of stem cells are not going to find a cure for diabetes. Here is another article.

If you want more information on the subject, send me a message and I will be more then happy to forward you any research I have.

117. Find some peer-reviewed papers & post them HERE!
Yes, valuable research is being done with other types of stem cell.

But that does not negate the need for more work with fetal stem cells.

118. They are already encapsulating islet cells.
Novacell is in trials for their encapsulation and they have 2 cell implanted patients not using immunosuppressive drugs.

122. It's Novocell, not Novacell...
here is the exact wording of the abstract from Novocell: "pancreata procured from human cadaver donors." Company is just finishing up phI/II studies therefore years away any drug development.

124. That is the current encapsulated trial.
But they have a human embryonic stem cell line that is producing insulin and they want to encapsulate those and begin trials.

You know some of us here ARE actually privy to scientific information so quit acting like you know what you're talking about.

For some strange reason I keep wanting to call you "Adam".

125. Stem Cell
Why the hostility?
I don know what I am talking about. The actual study from Novocell was from a cadaver donor NOT an embryonic cell. The trial that they are undergoing now are with adult stem cell (cadaver). They have isolated the embryonic cell, and they do plan on "attempting" to encapsulate the new cell in the future. The bottom line is the fact that the cell that works is the adult stem cell.

126. NO NO NO
Adult stem cells do not produce insulin. What they have encapsualted and are using NOW is cadaver beta cells. NOT STEM CELLS. They ar eimplanting islets from dead people. They are not CREATING NEW ISLETS.

Christ on a crutch.

120. I heard it was the other way around
Actually adult stem cells and umbilical stem cells are not as effective as embryonic stem cells. Embryonic cells can become ANY type of cell in the body.

129. Baloney.
Embryonic stem cells are far more useful.

That's why scientists want to use them.

What, you think scientists just make shit up?

119. Everyone should email Feminists for Life and ask them if they
support war. They are so fuckin hypocritical. If you support * you support death! Everytime I see Heaton I want to punch her in her damned botoxed face.

Also, I wonder what Heaton would want if one of her 4 boys came down with Parkinsons/Alzheimers or any other disease potentially treated with stem cells?
