Mayor Mike says he wants to raise the cigarette tax again. He wants to bring the cost of a pack of name brand cigarettes to $8.00 or more. He says he is doing it to protect the health of children. Yes there are health risks with the use of tobacco but there are other health risks in the 7-11 and corner grocery store as well.
If the mayor is trying to protect the health of children and not just trying to raise city revenue on the backs of smokers who can not have cheaper cigarettes delivered by Fed Ex or UPS then why is the punitive tax not used on other items? Maybe even items that children legally consume. Why is there not a $5.00 a box tax on cereal with a fructose sugar count higher than a certain amount? Why is there not a $5.00 tax per 2 liter bottle of Coke-Cola and a $1.00 tax per can? Why is he not pushing a $10.00 tax per dozen donuts?
