Wave Bye Bye to the Filibuster ? ? ?
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 11:42 AM by CrackpotAmerica

Democrats decline to block Alito nomination
<snip>
"Because we have such a full plate of pressing issues before Congress, a filibuster at this time would be, in my view, very counterproductive," said Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-Louisiana, who wants the Senate to concentrate on Hurricane Katrina rebuilding programs. "We simply cannot afford to bring the Senate to a halt at a time when we need its action the most."
</snip>

______________

I am so angry that I can't conjure up anything else to say.

Shame

On Edit: I added a few question marks to the title. It is still my opinion that Landrieu's comments sum it up, though.

I hope I am wrong.

2. What will the vote be. If all moderate(they are really not) Repubs and
the rest of Dems vote against, can Alito still go down?

14. Me too, no more Lieberman or Biden and ilk gettting my $
Why do the moderate Rebuplicans stay with their party? Can't they see how it is destroying our country? Why don't they become Dems or Indpendents until the Neocons self implode?

And why are the Dems so spineless?

4. Misleading title - This does not say there will not be a filibuster
It says that Landrieu and Salazar and other oppose it.

Nothing prevents somebody else to oppose the UC on cloture even if they dont have the vote. Continue calling.

8. This is the most ridiculous and stupid reason I have heard yet...
...not really surprising considering the source, but what in the world could be more important than protecting the Constitution/Women's Rights and Civil Liberties from someone that seems hell-bent on destroying them?

Talk about fucked up priorities.... :eyes: :grr:

9. Well, I understand her concerns
She's in a bad spot right now and, I think she's doing the right thing for Louisiana. You can't blame her. Louisiana is devastated - gone and she is representing that state and the people that live there. Right now she is totally engaged in the rebuilding of her state.

I do not fault her one bit. I am disappointed, however, that circumstances do not permit her to vote for the FB.

but just sits behind their computer screens and throws insults at the people who are trying to make a difference.

There are 8 other senators who aren't going to vote for the FB so - the FB isn't going to happen.

I respect her position on this.

21. Republicans have already been f'ing her and other Dems in LA
How will it be any different if she allows Bush to pack the court? Will that help Louisianans by letting this bum on the court? All she did was alienate those that tried to stand with her against the Bush cabal earlier! She should get thrown to the wolves now! Lousiana, if you want your state back, you'll vote for a NEW set of Dems come election time. If you don't, you deserve what you get, and I'll encourage those I know that are decent folks there to get the hell out of the "failed" Jesusland state there!

24. Makes sense in this repub, bizarro world we're livin' in now.
I can't believe that after these years, and Dimson's** repeated screw-ups and lying that she is dumb enough to believe a single goddamned promise he's made to LA. ESPECIALLY after he demonstrated how much he cared while the people were dehydrating, etc., 'cause he had to eat cake with McCain and play guitar after he finally got his fucking ass out of Crawford!!!!

I can't believe that she could be this dense.

22. Read the article...it is another warning shot against the leadership.
They keep trying to make the story "smooth sailing" for Alito, and perpetuating the myth that Alito is a mainstream candidate who deserves a vote, and they keep trotting out right-wing fringe Dems like Lieberman and Landrieu to justify their storyline. Don't believe the hype.

25. Yea, but this was the thing that bothered me..
"Even though Democrats like Landrieu and Ken Salazar of Colorado won't support a filibuster, that doesn't mean that liberals aren't working to get the largest vote against Alito possible."

As if "the largest vote against Alito possible" is a sufficient Democratic statement in response to this nomination.

19. Landrieu is kidding herself....NOLA is going to get shit.
Money talks and bullshit walks...and guess what..the K-Street Lobbyists who work for the people who want to redevelop NOLA in their own image will get the cash and not the folks in LA. So while Landrieu thinks she is doing something for the benefit of people in LA ...she isn't ...Bush is hoping that this disaster will force more men to join the military out of necessity in order to feed their families...

Filibuster Alito, and then we can try and help NOLA. Letting in a pro-corporate, anti-choice, pro fascist into the Court is not going to help your state, and is not in the best interest of your constituents.

31. So what arguments are likely to convince her that she is wrong?
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 01:15 AM by Wordie
Let's see: there was already an effort by Bush, during Hurricane Katrina, to try to take over authority from governor of the state of LA...so talking about that, and tying it to Alito's views of expanded presidential powers might help.

Then there's the issue of the theory of the unitary executive, which Alito is in support of, which would give Bush even greater power over federal agencies. Perhaps Landrieu wouldn't be so sure he'd do a heck-of-a-job with that additional power, given his Katrina response. Not to mention that Bush fought the rehabilitation of the levees in the first place; with additional powers, that Alito, if confirmed, would be likely to grant him, LA would be likely to get less money rather than more. Bush's philosophy, of a limited federal government, is one that says that the federal government isn't really there to help the states; it's up to them to solve their own problems. Does Landrieu really want to vote for a Judge who will support such efforts, even indirectly, by granting the president even more authority to decimate federal programs, if that's what he wants to do? Keep in mind that there is quite a controversy over whether the president really has such powers. I know I would want a Justice who does not subscribe to an expansion of presidential powers, what about Landrieu?

Frame the argument to Landrieu in terms that she cares about, and you may convince her. Bitch about her, and you surely won't.
