Firefox 2 (final release version) available NOW on Mozilla's FTP servers
Get Firefox 2.0 early from Mozilla's FTP servers

By Todd Weiss, Computerworld

http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/10/23/firefox/index.php

A day before the scheduled public release of its long-awaited Firefox 2.0 Web browser, the Mozilla Foundation has posted the final versions of the software on its FTP servers in preparation for the public launch.

The official Firefox 2.0 public launch page has not been activated on the Mozilla site, but the new U.S. versions for Windows, Linux and Macintosh are available now, buried amid the data on the group’s FTP servers. Versions in other languages are also available at Mozilla’s FTP site.

On Friday, Mozilla had said it would make the new Firefox 2.0 browser available tomorrow. The last preview version of the browser, called Release Candidate 3, was posted for public download last Monday. The official Firefox Web page still offers version 1.5.0.7 of the browser for download, but is expected to be updated or replaced to allow downloads of Firefox 2.0.

New features in Firefox 2.0 include built-in anti-phishing controls, built-in RSS and XML feed-viewing capabilities and a new inline spell checker.

The launch of Firefox 2.0 follows on the heels of Microsoft’s launch last week of a major upgrade of its Internet Explorer browser, IE7.

2. I don't know if I like that new default theme...
I still use XP and it doesn't fit in exactly. They will probably release a version of the old theme for firefox. I have to say I love the inline spell checker, because I am using it right now as I type and it is helpful.

It's very good. It's hella fast with the new Firetune, which was released today. It's on Majorgeeks as well.

5. Has anyone heard anything good about IE7?
Because I got a warning NOT TO DO IT from someone on my email list who downloaded it. She was not happy.

6. Oh, it is a total piece of crap...
Just say no. That is the way I treat it anymore. I can't believe there was a time when there was no Firefox. Truly it is the best browser out there.

13. Problem is, you still need Microsoft IE...damn it!
I've been using Mozilla for years, on both my Mac and my several PC's. But there are still web sites that simply won't work unless you're using IE. Especially sites that involve a lot of Flash and other plug-ins that simply don't work with any Mozilla or Netscape products.

And much as you might like Firefox, there's stuff that Mozilla will open that Firefox won't!

The moral: don't be too proud or demanding of any software product.

14. IE7 is pretty good, IMO
Much more secure and stable. Very fast. Also has malware and phishing detector, which are very unobtrusive.

Before IE7, I was using both Firefox and Avant Browser, which is essentially an IE wraparound. Recent versions of AB have been terrible, though. Lots of bloating, sluggishness and errors. None of those problems exist with the new IE.

I would recommend downloading IE7, even if you just use Firefox.

23. Uhh...Flash works fine for Firefox....
Also, the only websites that don't work with Firefox or Mozilla are those using ActiveX or a derivative as a "plugin".

Usually, if I find a website that doesn't work with Firefox, I change its identifier so that the website "thinks" I'm using IE, works every time, so far.

27. I havent used IE since i got firefox.
If you have problems opening pages that like IE, try this extension.

IE Tab

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1419/

IE Tab - an extension from Taiwan, features: Embedding Internet Explorer in tabs of Mozilla/Firefox.

This is a great tool for web developers, since you can easily see how your webpage displayed in IE with just one click and then switch back to Firefox.

Enjoy!

33. Am I? Are you challenging me to a Browser Duel?
It's one thing to say that about political matters where it's human perception and opinion that matter. But it's another when you have a computer and IE works and Firefox doesn't, and you know it doesn't, and some yahoo who WON'T POST ANY JUSTIFICATION IN THE BODY OF HIS LETTER, YOU JERK, says you don't.

I only need to point out that there are certain programs that call up web pages, either internally or for browsing web content, that expect Internet Explorer for that work, look for IE, require IE, and won't accept any substitute as a browser.

And if you are go about throwing such insults, at least have the courtesy to provide justifications as to why the person is "full of shit" by writing something in the body of the post, YOU JERK.

21. Yeah IE7 is good
I just got it. They really did a good job cleaning the crap out of this one. It has tabs and some new security features like phishing detection. Way better than the previous versions.

I use Firefox most of the time and IE for sites that require it. Plus I modify the hell out of my firefox view preferences so I will open up certain sites in IE to see what they are "supposed to look like".

...but they usually catch up within a day or two of Firefox releases. "Download Embedded" is a another favorite that's currently disabled, but Site Advisor, No Script & Forecastfox are working fine.

If there were a tool that looked at all installed extensions, and told you which ones had ff2.0 versions. To save me the trouble of looking up each one....

30. Speaking of the close tab button.
If anyone wants to change it back the way it was. (always on the right)

1. enter about:config in the address bar and hit enter
2. find browser.tabs.closeButtons
3. right click on it and select modify
4. change the value to 3

A list of the different settings:
* 0: Only show close button on currently selected tab
* 1: Show close button on all tabs (default)
* 2: Never show close buttons on tabs
* 3: Show a single close button at the far right (1.5 behavior)

16. Firefox 2.0 is da shiznit!
Edited on Tue Oct-24-06 09:12 AM by Fighting Irish
Just installed it. This thing is fast!

New Firefox and IE within a week??? It's a computer geek's wet dream!

For Firefox 2.0, I do recommend No Script, which blocks malicious scripting from websites:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/722/

After spending the last few weeks getting rid of hijacks, trojans, etc, you can obviously see what one of my biggest concerns is.

Another interesting-looking one is the "US Department of Homeland Insecurity Idiocy Level":

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1501/

18. Yes, No Script is a "must"...but also get Site Advisor:
http://www.siteadvisor.com/download/ff.html

It's excellent because it gives you safety ratings for the site you're on as well as every site that comes up in your Google search results. You know before clicking on a link if the site is "risky."

UI of Safari.

All in all it appears to be a winner. IE 7 better be a big improvement or FireFox is going to clean its clock.
