Did we find our missing soldier? Does this mean we have legalized
his torture if he is captured?

I mean, if the terrorists decide to "play nice" and go by the laws we have set up for ourselves doesn't this open the damn door that every retired military person in the world tried to warn Chucklenuts & the Cabal about?

All that said - I hope this guy is found safe and sound, happy and whole with nothing more that him needing to comb his hair. I do not understand how repugs sleep at night.

1. "He" is a translater, who are typically women.
Which means this missing soldier is a lot bigger deal since it's gonna be spun outta control.

3. All I know is that a soldier (gender unannounced) has gone missing.
About 5:30 pm local Iraqi time it was reported that a soldier was missing. The military has been conducting a house to house search for the missing person with no luck as of 2:30 am Iraqi time (saw this on CNN a couple of hours ago).

At the time of the report nothing was known except name, rank, etc. but they weren't releasing it to the media. They stressed they did not know if he had been captured (kidnapped is the term they used), lost, AWOL or what but my first thought was to the Geneva Convention and where does it leave this guy/gal if he was taken prisoner.

4. My first thought was rape, torture and a new meme for the RNC campaign
on war and "terra"!

I'm guessing she's blonde too, so they can play up the whole patriotic "rescue". Otherwise why would they even announce that a soldier has been kidnapped? They would want to suppress that info....

:puke:

6. Geneva Conventions are meaningless here.
Edited on Mon Oct-23-06 09:54 PM by igil
They are voluntarily adopted by states, and they may do so with stipulations as to how they will be followed, or which provisions will be ignored.

However if this translator was captured, it's unlikely that a state military did so. Therefore the Geneva Conventions are irrelevant.

Baathists have been torturing--we're talking amputations, severe burns, psychological ploys like torturing family members in front of the captive, throwing people off buildings--for decades; the Russian proverb "you're not a thief unless you're caught" seems to govern their actions. Islamists have been doing like things a far sight longer, for all the posturing and revising of history; the Geneva Conventions are a Western ploy, of no validity for this group since they serve a higher morality. They did this before we went into Iraq; they did this before we went into Afghanistan.

In other words: People are grown ups and from time to time, no matter how hard it may be to believe, simply follow their own moral compass.

7. Bingo
Everyone I have met who served in Afghanistan knew the queen of hearts was on the table in the event of capture. They knew they would be killed on camera for mom and dad to see.
