Soldier Speaks Out About Alleged Unit Desertion

(CBS) LOS ANGELES An Army medic who deserted his unit to avoid being deployed for a second tour of duty in Iraq surfaced in Los Angeles Tuesday, saying he was ready to take responsibility for his actions.

Spc. 1st Class Agustin Aguayo, a medic with the 1st Infantry Division, crawled out of an Army base window in Germany to avoid being sent back to Iraq. snip

"Because I have taken this stand, I am free even though my body will probably be locked up for a period of time and it's something I can live with," Aguayo said. "Something I can't live with is being a participant of war anymore." snip

"At the moment I signed up, I was ready and willing to do anything that was asked of me," he said. "However, over time, we as humans change."
