I don't feel I inherited "vet status" from my spouse...hell, I was only 5 or 6 when he was in Vietnam...However, I do think family members of veterans do have a special status different from those who have never been close to one who has gone to war. To say otherwise, is to sell them short. My heart breaks whenever I look at this kind, gentle man, and think of the innocence that was taken away from him in Vietnam. I get angry every time I think of the carelessness with which his life was treated by the government that sent him over there. I thank God every day that he came into my life, instead of simply being a name I read on a wall in D.C. I had heard about the horrors of war before I met my husband, as I studied VN quite extensively in grad school. And I can tell you that it's very different when it's told to you by a loved one...you start seeing it and feeling it through them.

As I said, I didn't know my spouse at the time, so I can't even imagine what it feels like to have a loved one currently fighting. While families don't inherit "vet status", they do in my view, have a unique insight into war, that entitles them to voice their opinions with some authority. My spouse's vet status probably has a whole lot to do with my feelings about the Iraq war, which I have been against since the beginning.

18. I think most military folks

thought they were doing the right thing when they voluntarily joined up to go to Iraq. Most who had been in any length of time were probably more circumspect about it. I think most are coming around now and realizing that they were lied to and are being led by incompetent nincompoops. They don't want to die there any more than we want them to die there.

I even converted my son-in-law, who was a dyed in the wool republican, to a democrat! Between my daughter and me, the poor guy didn't stand a chance. It makes me so proud that he could see the wisdom of what we both were saying. He & my daughter have been holding showings of Iraq for Sale this month to do their election part.

a Vietnam vet. He's been liberal since JFK. He went into the USAF before VN really heated up (so he could go to college afterward), but ended up doing 14 months in VN, he was there for Tet. He thinks VN was wrong, as well as the current war. He's not on DU, he's more into Move On.

My dad was a USN ensign in WWII, both my grandpas served in WWI. I graduated HS in '72 and just missed the draft for nam but had many aquaintences who didn't miss...

I cannot and would not claim inherited vet status though I respect the hell out of those that served.

What is interesting is that my Dad's dad was in Black Jack Pershing's 2'nd division in WWI and saw alot of action in the trenches. When he got back home to Chicago he was a carpenter and cabinet maker mostly unemployed during the depression. He participated in the Bonus March on DC, saw and heard Gen. Smedley Butler and joined the US Communist party in the 30's...

Unfortunately grandpa died young from lung probs caused by the mustard gas and my only memories were of him essentially on his death bed, I was 6. I only learned that my grandpa was a protester and a commie a couple of years ago from my dad when he told me as a kid he was introduced to the communist candidate for prez in the 30's by his dad... grandpa hung signs and was active...

I am not a commie nor a socialist. I am a patriot and I love my country but the apple does not fall too far....

Good training, but I would have severe second thoughts about enlisting under the current mis-administration.

Air Force seemed like the best choice at the time - in the Army, you get shot at and most of the officers tend to stay behind the lines. In the Air Force, the enlisted tend to stay behind the lines and fix the airplanes, and we sent the officers up to get shot at. It just seemed like a MUCH better way of doing things, to an enlisted person.
