It’s still very, very difficult, very tough. Nobody should underestimate the extent to which we’re engaged there with this sort of, at present, the “major front” of the war on terror.
That’s what Osama bin Laden says, and he’s right. http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/01/20060125-1.htmlTHE PRESIDENT:
Officials here learn information about plotters and planners and people who would do us harm. Now, I understand there's some in America who say, well, this can't be true there are still people willing to attack.
All I would ask them to do is listen to the words of Osama bin Laden and take him seriously. When he says he's going to hurt the American people again, or try to, he means it. I take it seriously, and the people of NSA take it seriously. And most of the American people take it seriously, as well.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/10/20061014-3.htmlTHE PRESIDENT: "But they've made clear that the most important front in their struggle against America is Iraq - the nation bin Laden has declared the 'capital of the Caliphate.'
Hear the words of bin Laden: 'I now address... the whole... Islamic nation: Listen and understand... The most... serious issue today for the whole world is this Third World War... (that) is raging in (Iraq).' He calls it 'a war of destiny between infidelity and Islam.' He says, 'The whole world is watching this war,' and that it will end in 'victory and glory or misery and humiliation.' For al Qaeda, Iraq is not a distraction from their war on America - it is the central battlefield where the outcome of this struggle will be decided." (President Bush, Remarks, Washington, DC, 9/5/06)

Now there are some who say we're not at war. There are some who say Iraq is not part of the War on Terror.
I strongly disagree. And so does Usama bin Laden, and Mr. Zawahiri, sworn enemies of the United States, who would like to attack us again. And that's the fundamental difference of attitude. I'm never going to question anybody's patriotism.
