The population of human beings on the planet Earth is now over 6,500,000,000.

The biggest consumer of natural resources on the planet is the U.S. -- and our human population is now 300,000,000+.

The reason why global warming is so bad and so dangerous is because there are too many human beings all aspiring to become consumers of energy and material items like Americans.

But here in the U.S., especially because of the illegal immigration debate, liberals and progressives and environmentalist are not supposed to talk about "overpopulation".

This is why there is very little reason to be optimistic about our future -- dealing with global warming and dwindling resources is directly related to "overpopulation" and is a huge political problem. But we're not supposed to talk about this because somehow it makes us intolerant or bigoted.

This is indeed a sad day for the U.S.; it means that we are failing to seriously address the critical environmental and social problems facing us. Three hundred million people living here, all wanting cars and processed food and computers and lots of electricity to run the dishwasher and dryer and DVD player means that our carbon footprint as a nation is increasing hugely. That means the whole Earth suffers from more greenhouse gases infiltrating the atmosphere.

But, let's not talk about this, because it makes us too uncomfortable.

Oil is in decline, natural gas will peak in North America and the associated costs of agriculture and transportation will only increase as further demands are put on them.

I look to Europe and Japan and see that they at least consider sustainability. Amerika is so consumed with its own myopia and capitalistic inertia that there is no way to prevent the coming train wreck. It seems addressing a daunting problem now would be far preferable to addressing an impossible problem later.

Overpopulation is the #1 problem. Many other problems are simply symptoms: war, famine, plagues, destruction of natural habitat.
