Our fly-boy pResident doesn't know planes
Edited on Mon Oct-16-06 08:26 AM by Xipe Totec
This mistake was brought to my attention by a friend who happens to be an ex-Freeper. Not a Dem, yet, but pissed off enough to blow out the candles on his Ronald Regan memorial altar. Anyway, he listened to this speech live on Saturday and it nearly drove him nuts with rage. How can a war pResident be so clueless about history?

President Bush Attends United States Air Force Memorial Dedication

October 14, 2006

Quote:

"We saw the importance of air power six days ago -- six decades ago, after our nation was attacked at Pearl Harbor. Soon after the attack, General Hap Arnold called Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle into his office and gave him an unprecedented mission -- retaliate against Tokyo. Just over four months later, Doolittle's raiders had shocked the world by striking the enemy capital some 4,000 miles away from Pearl Harbor. To do it, they had to load B-52 bombers on the deck of an aircraft carrier, sail within a few hundred miles of enemy territory, take off and drop their payloads, knowing they had little chance to make it safely to China."

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/10/20061014-2.html

Problems:

B-52 bombers did not exist then; they flew for the first time on April 15, 1952.

http://www.boeing.com/history/boeing/b52.html

Doolittle flew B-25 bombers

http://www.doolittleraider.com/

It wasn't six decades ago (1946), it was 64 years ago (1942).

Anybody with experience around planes would know the difference between a B-25

And a B-52

Our little fly-boy president does not know planes from a hole in the ground.

Miraculous Eternal Lights as standard equipment.

What's worse, Smirk's never worked a day in his life.

Thanks for relating Monkey's AFA speech.

3. It's a sign of his irrelevance that no one else caught this.
I certainly would have, if I bothered to pay any attention to him anymore.

Thanks for posting.

23. You have a point
I stopped watching his speeches because I'm allergic to lies and break out in a rash.

It's my friends and colleagues that used to support him that are now coming around and giving me these gems.

Chimpy's support is definitely eroding fast.

7. I was thinking the same thing.
Might as well launch the space shuttle from a carrier - what sight that'd be!

Also, even if it was correct on his script and his dyslexia caused him to switch the numbers, he should have known better than to let it go.

11. It can be done...
but you have to take them apart first, just like we had to take that US Navy EP-3 spy plane apart to get it back from the Chinese.

Of course, it came back inside the belly of a Russian cargo plane

This disaster also happened on Chimpy's watch.

Ah, it's good to get historical facts right every once in a while.

18. That would imply Chimpy wrote the speech himself
and I doubt that.

It's more likely that his entire staff suffers from disfactia; the inability to keep facts straight.

is dyslexic. Or Bushie being dyslexic reversed the numbers when reading from the teleprompter. He always reminds me a grade school kid reading his book report to the class. Droning without any dramatic inflection...............

31. It's actually posted that way on the White House website
Chimpy read it straight; it's the speech writers that blew it. Probably wrote the stuff off-the-cuff, without validating the facts. This is why it casts a pall on anything coming out of the White House; they simply do not check their facts.

17. Hey! At least frat boy got a "5" and a "2" into the bomber description
That's better than I would have expected.

Lemesee:

B-25 wingspan = 67'7"
B-52 wingspan = 185'

Sure looks like 67'7" is a tight fit from this angle, but then again, maybe I'm being picky

25. Best plane ever made
I was stationed at Beale AFB in Marysvilled Cal when there were only two bases running the SR-71, Edwards and Beale, and my Brother was a Sgt at Edwards so we had the Flying Kodak Brownie Camera Blackbird flying over our heads all day long..

It's a KILLER looking plane and so well engineered.. No one ever figured out just how fast that sucker would go, one pilot told me that he'd tried to take it to maximum thrust and had to slow down as the windshields started melting, the engines still had lots of reserve..

It's one plane I know and was sad when they took it out of commission, I think it would STILL be a great plane for recon..

B-52's on Carriers? Is he NUTS? Yeah, yeah.. I keep one in the trunk of my CAR for emergencies :)

28. SR-71 thread hijack ;-)
I just re-read "Sled Driver" and "The Untouchables", by Brian Shul, about his experiences flying the SR-71.

Quite an incredible aircraft. Speed WAS limited ... by the inlet compressor temperature (437C) and by the shape of the shock wave. Somewhere in excess of Mach 3.5, the shockwave from the nose would start to interfere with the engine inlets.

I do call BS on the windshield melt, though. B-)

32. I don't mind
I was involved with the nav system for shuttle. The original design used TACAN as a sensor. Since shuttle flies upward of Mach 10 when it approaches the California coast, nobody knew if the TACAN would achieve lock at those speeds. So we had an SR-71 fly some mock approaches to Edwards.

As I recall, the bird took off in the morning, flew half way to Hawaii, flew back, then north to the Canadian border, flew back, and landed in time for lunch. The actual speed of the SR-71 during this exercise was never disclosed to us.

36. Somewhere in excess
try Mach 6+

Like I said I was there, I talked to these guys, ate with them, watched them suit up in the spacesuits, took the "tour".. if a pilot tells me he opened one up and the windshield started to melt, I would believe him.. especially since I was in Purchasing in the USAF and had to BUY the PARTS for the damn thing..

Maybe that shit was supposed to be secret, I did have that clearance, but since the plane is decommissioned now I suppose I can say it.

There's more going on than people would ever realize.

Sound like good books, thanks. :)

Mr. pResident, I know B52s, some of my best friends in the USAF serving in at Utapao in Thailand in 1970 were crew on B52s, and you Mr. pResident would not know a B52 if it came up and bit you in the ass.

22. Rate this up! Bush's most stupid statement ever! (No mean feat, that)
Anyone remember during the Clinton administration, the VRWC made a big to do about an alleged statement by some lowly staffer at a WH meeting about launching C-130s off a carrier. The noise machine ran with it as evidence (they imagined) of Clinton's cluelessness about all things military.

Now comes this gem by the Commander-in-Chief himself...and in front of all the USAF brass at the Air Force Memorial dedication!?! And the morans actually post the speech verbatim on the White House web site?!?

I come from an Air Force family and you can bet my catche will be running brim-full with forwarded attachments of this beauty.
