Paying for yearly online access to newspapers is bullshit. I don't care
if Times Select for a year comes to only 14 cents a day.... Before the internet, I didn't buy the paper every day. Sometimes I never read it. Or I read someone else's. Less and less is available in the NYT archives in travel and food sections unless you pay for abstracts or go TS. Also, more than ever I end up at news sites that want me to pay. Maybe I am just Mister Cheapo but I think this is a marketing error on the part of the NYT and other newspapers. It just turns me off to even trying to ferret out info from their sources. And it makes me head elsewhere.

Perhaps a new system in which you pay a flat fee for widespread newspaper access is the answer, I don't know. The present system sucks. Thoughts anyone?

1. I won't pay to subscribe to an online NP!
Yes, there have been times when I wanted to read an article or a column by a favorite writer, but unless they are willing to sell their subscription for $1.00 a year, then heck with them.

2. If you look around, you can usually find the article you seek
Someone cuts and pastes it for educational, discussion and non-profit purposes.

As it is, they bombard us with ads, and other sites manage on ad revenue.

If their business model can't support free news, they'll be left behind by those who CAN accomodate our need for information without paying a fee.

3. Yeah but I 'm pretty lazy. Tell you something else I dont understand...
the way news flow just slows and almost stops at night and on weekends. It just seems ridiculous... as if we all jut agree to a big cross the board "time out" from news and events that might bum us out. It feels so contrived.

8. So you're lazy. Are you grumpy too?
Try using grumpy as your login name & your password at NYT. Works for me.

9. Yes--I've googled many a headline from the NY Times, WSJ, and
other papers, and usually gotten hits with full text, publiched the same time as the original. In particular, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette online has for free most of the important stories the Wall Street Journal charges to read.

For archived articles, that many more newspapers charge to access, my local public library often is a free online source. Have you ever tried accessing your public library online? A thorough surf of the site might surprise you.

5. Doesn't bother me. But I subscribe to NYT (daily).
The content is their own property and they should be able to manage their property in whatever way they wish.

14. Thanks!
I just installed it! I started using Firefox a little over a week ago and love it. It has a few bugs, but it has much more functionality than Safari, my other main browser. :hi:
