A 3 Week Truce. Purely Voluntary. Any takers?
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 09:10 PM by Tom Rinaldo
Between now and Election Day, if I have negative things to say about a specific Democrat, I pledge to say nothing about that Democrat instead. Lieberman obviously doesn't count, because he is running AGAINST a Democrat.

DU is a free speech zone so I have no complaint with anyone here who doesn't want any part of a moratorium on attacks on Democrats. Also, every rule has exceptions so I reserve the right to get angry at another Democrat if they do anything NEW that is dumb ass stupid before Election Day, but I will not attack any of them for something that I already knew about them.

Let me just say I already know that this would be a truly TERRIBLE personal policy to maintain any longer than roughly 3 weeks. I have lots of critical things to say both to and about lots of Democrats, and usually I believe that saying all of it, both the good and the bad, is a positive thing to do.

No, this is a symbolic gesture for me, offered in the spirit of wanting and expecting the Democratic Party to regain control of Congress, and reflecting my desire to not piss off any Democrat working toward that end. You think Senator Bayh walks on water? That must come in handy sometimes. You think Hillary Clinton is the salvation for America? It's nice to have someone to believe in. Think the DLC has the best blueprint for America? I'm counting on every DLC Dem elected to vote for Pelosi and Reid to lead the next Congress, and thank them in advance for that.

I am all Democratic Unity now, until the day after Election Day

2. I'm totally with you.
I've been avoiding posting anything negative on Democrats anyway (with the exception of ones who have voted for torture, and or endorsed Lieberman).

After Nov 7, there will be two whole YEARS to rip other Democrats to shreds over the primaries. I certainlyl don't have any problem putting it off for a few more weeks.

3. LOL Pretty much the relative non response I expected
It's not exactly like there's any news value to this thread, and no real opportunity for anyone to bitch and complain.

4. Sure, but I just got attacked
by partisan hacks simply for expressing my opinion about the Governor race in MA. Not my fault if we always end up with the candidates we end up with...

5. Wes Clark supporters are singlehandedly responsible for the 2004 results!
Just kidding ... really!

Actually, I think your idea will have more merit when the presidential election rolls around - we will all have to get behind the nominee when that person is chosen, and support our preferences civilly before the choice is made.

In this cycle, I think a hands-off policy is less important, as long as we all go full-tilt in support of our local people. The only kind of post I would absolutely decry is any attempt to keep people away from the polls.

9. LOL. As for the Presidential Elections, yeah, but that lasts months!
I think of this as practice for then. And having been through the primary season last time around here, I am with you with in urging us all to support our preferences civilly, but I would probably settle for a more realistic goal such as: Not Viciously!

10. Those are two good points: we can certainly use some
practice at not devouring one another, and 'civil' may be a bit high to aim...:)

Here's to your admirable (yet almost certainly doomed) attempt to encourage a bit of maturity in our interactions! :toast:

6. As the poster of the TIME cover story on Obama this morning --
a thread which spawned a slime festival of negativity -- I salute you, Sir! Kicked and recommended.

8. Depends on the behavior of those in office I'm depending on.
I say negative things to negative acts. That said, I'm voting for dems across the board.

11. Well I did give myself an out
I left room for myself to get angry at NEW stupid things that some Democrats may do between now and election day, I'm just cutting some temporary slack on old issues I have with some of them.
