LA RADIO AD: "vote early on a touch screen voting machine"
"You don't even have to go to your precinct! Just come to the county clerk's office!"

I thought these things were outlawed here. Anybody know what's going on with this, besides an attempt to shove Arnold down our throats for another four years?

1. Who sponsored that ad? Can you find out?

Because we need to call them and ask who is securing those machines?

How STUPID do they think we are?

3. Last time I checked...CA has a REPUBLICAN Sec. of State running elections
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 07:17 PM by KeepItReal
And you thought *he* was gonna ban PC Voting??

The Secretary of State position was the real coup in throwing out Gray Davis...one little smear campaign against the then Democratic Sec. of State...he quits...GOP Governor Ahnuld then gets to appoint his replacement...

5. the LA county clerk has been a big advocate for Diebold
and the supervisors refuse to fire her.

The democrats in the state legislature let the GOP run out the Democratic sec of state who caught Diebold techs swapping out software red-handed, and then they confirmed Arnold's choice for replacement, even though there was precedent for leaving the position open until the election and letting the lt. sec of state run things.

A few Dems in Sacramento take this seriously, like Debra Bowen, who is running for sec of state, but not enough to protect us, even though Dems are the over-whelming majority here in CA.

23. Early Voting Statewide (CA)
Early Voting Opened Statewide
The Associated Press
Published: October 9, 2006
SACRAMENTO (AP) - Early voting for the Nov. 7 election opened statewide on Monday.

At an appearance in Fresno, Secretary of State Bruce McPherson said he hoped the extra time would increase voter participation among young adults and people with disabilities.

Calling the early voting process “simple,” McPherson stressed that “any voter, for any reason” can take advantage of the option, as long as they are properly registered.

13. Yeah. Smear campaign driven by the "liberal" (cough) SF Chronicle.
The folks who buried all the Enron "Fuck Grandma Millie" revelations on page 16 felt they had to run full two-page spreads on how Kevin Shelley was supposedly a "mean boss" who may have once thrown a cell phone.

Stop the presses!

That was a TOTAL smear job. McPherson has to go.

17. that "mean" behavior happens every day in Hollywood, and probably
a variation occurs in executive offices in corporate America.

Not that I believe the charges were true(I have no opinion one way or the other), but his work protecting our right to vote far outweighed this gossip-mongering.

And contrast that drumbeat with GOP circling the wagons around Hastert now, or fighting back against sex stories on Arnold during the recall.

24. second most vacuous smear campaign after "Dean Scream"
although in Dean's case, it was probably better to be the victim of character assassination than the other kind.

11. I went to the Dem HQ yesterday to see how I could get an absentee ballot
Edited on Wed Oct-11-06 10:21 PM by blackops
and was told I could go to the Board of Elections now and vote on a machine OR ON PAPER! I asked the woman at the desk if it was some kind of provisional ballot and she told me, "No, it's a regular ballot."

I'm going to call the BOE tomorrow and get more info. I'm in Ohio, and there's no way I'm going to trust my vote to a DRE.

15. LETTER TO DEBRA BOWEN (one of few Dems not asleep at the wheel)
Debra Bowen authored the state's legislation to try to fix this and is running for secretary of state.

TO: info@debrabowen.com Senator.Bowen@sen.ca.gov

They say you don't even have to go to your correct precinct, you can just go to LA County Clerk's office.

I'm not sure if I've heard a single commercial about how to find out where your precinct is or how to sign up for an absentee ballot, but this touch screen commercial is on heavy rotation on KTLK 1150 in LA.

Debra, is this legit?

If you and Jerry Brown win, there should be a criminal investigation of these companies, and the bureaucrats and elected officials who fought so hard to get them, and there should certainly be an investigation into the recall that got Arnold into office.

18. Another thought on this: those ads cost MONEY. Probably taxpayer
money. I'm going to call KTLK and ask if those are paid or PSA's they are doing as a gimme. If it's a PSA, some complaints might get them pulled.

What's ironic was during that last special election, I went to the sec of states website to find the correct precinct for a friend, and got to an "under construction" page just a day or two before the election. I'm pretty web savvy, but it took some digging around before I finally found it somewhere else.

RE: vote early on touch screen machine ads

I've noticed those "vote early on touchscreen machine" ads are in pretty heavy rotation. Is some government agency like the secretary of state's office or the county clerk's office paying for those? If so, how much? Since it's taxpayer money, the information could hardly be considered confidential.

If you are doing those as free PSA's, I urge you to reconsider in light of the serious problems that numerous universities and secretaries of states have found with these machines and their erratic performance in elections all over the country.

It would be a greater public service to tell people how to register to vote, find their precinct, and sign up for absentee ballots.
