8. It was trains versus planes
The interviewee was talking about plane travel being very safe, safer than driving, certainly. And Carlson said that he has friends that have been in plane crashes, that HE had been in a plane crash, but he hears hardly anything about train crashes. He was saying, in effect, that trains are safer than planes, in spite of all the talk about planes being the safest way to travel.(Perhaps he's decided to travel on trains exclusively, now?)

Isaac Asimov, I think, always traveled by train, was afraid of flying. I hope I've got that right; I remember reading about it years ago. What was so funny was that Asimov wrote about traveling about in space so much but was afraid of flying. Actually, so am I! Afraid of flying, that is. The older I get, the more afraid I get.

20. Read his book, Politicians, Partisans and Parasites
Or just ask him.

It was the kind of jet crash we all have nightmares about. Nighttime, darkness outside the windows, sudden loud BOOM exploding from a wing, and the jet went down in a nosedive at a sharp angle. The pilot regained enough control that the jet crashlanded hard in landing position, but apparently its landing gear malfunctioned, and the aircraft shuddered over several miles of sand dune. Tucker was instructed to stay in his seat after the jet crashlanded. Instead, he got up, forced the emergency door, and saved several people.

I know we have our differences with him, but reading people wishing a friend of mine had died in a jet disaster is a bit much for me to read on DU. Despite his politics, he is a human being. We wouldn't be happy if Freepers made cruel comments about Stephen Colbert's father and brother, who both perished in a jet disaster, would we? I know I'd be angry enough to hurt somebody on the right if I read that. I think we'd consider they had dropped to a new low. So what are we doing here? I'm kind of hurt by these hateful things being said about Carlson. Not sure what to think. I mean, are you guys kidding? Or...? Well... guess not.

But y'know, I guess when I see a post with my acquaintance's name headlining it, I have the option of not clicking it. But I just hate having to assume people will say rude things about someone I know. DU is better than that, and we libs are better people than that. I despise Ann Coulter with a vengeance and think it would be a better world if she had never been born, BUT I am not wishing someone would rape or murder the nutty evil bitch. I just want her to shut her mouth and resign.

Tucker is on his way towards becoming liberal. About how welcoming do you think he would see our side as, if he read these posts? Honestly it is hard enough warming him up to left of center ideals like I am trying to do. It's difficult enough, but working - as you saw the other night. When you guys tear into him like this, it gives him no incentive to change his ways and join us.

I'll shut up now. You guys have the right to say anything you like. I realize that.
:-(

21. hsher.... I doubt anyone other than you knew this...
I certainly didn't.... Tucker gets on my nerves, but I'd take him over so many RW (and some supposed LW) pundits.... At least he has a sense of humor and isn't a strict Bush* sycophant. I've always believed he was truly horrified by Bush* when he mimicked Karla Faye Tucker's appeal for mercy--and probably by the guy in general as time has gone by.

At any rate, I wouldn't condone anyone "wishing" him or anyone else the aftermath of a plane crash. Sorry that you caught a bit of unpleasantness--especially with respect to someone you know.

Welcome to DU, nonetheless, hsher. :toast:

22. Thank you, HL!
Hi hlthe2b! Thanks for the welcome!

I thought long and hard after making that post, and I feel kind of bad about it now. I should have just kept my opinion to myself about this. What made me post it was a kneejerk "hey that's my friend, stop picking on him," but the fact *is* Tucker has worked very hard to rightfully deserve a lot of DU-ers' contempt, scorn and dislike. He's part of the system we're all fighting hard to erase. He's also an adult and responsible for his actions and comments. Many of those have been kinda down the middle, a few have been down on our side, but most far and away have been in service to the right. I deserve probably an asskicking for defending him. This is a liberal board and I am a liberal. To come to a liberal community and try to dictate how other folks should feel about a man who has done a lot of harm to our system and our country, as well as to a lot of innocent Democrats, was really in poor taste and bad form.

I apologize to everyone who may have been upset by my kneejerk defense of Tucker Carlson. That's something I'm not going to do again. To do it on Democratic Underground is just plain wrong. There's plenty of people who think Tucker is just swell and the damage he's doing to our democracy is even better. If I want to read cheerleading of him, I should hold my nose and go over to Free Republic or something. So again I apologize. Serves me right.

When you decide to make someone your friend, and they do something wrong, you have to stand up for what's right. That means sometimes not standing up for them.

Cheers and thanks again for the welcome! :toast:

27. No, I don't think you should have
kept your mouth shut, you made some very valid points and you gave information about the plane crash he was in that a good many of us didn't know at all. I'm frankly surprised that his experience isn't better known, given his MSM status.

I fully agree that it's sickening to joke about something like that and that we sound like the very freepers we deride as mean-spirited when we do so. Some things, such as matters of life and death, transcend politics, or at least SHOULD transcend politics, no matter how we may feel about the person involved.

It sounds like he should have been a bit clearer and more detailed about his own experience after saying that he'd been in a plane crash. I didn't see the program, though, so can't say for certain one way or the other.

28. Agree...
There's always a fine line between becoming the "PC Police" and simply trying to encourage a bit of civility, so that we don't start to mimick our coarse and crude RW counterparts...

Some don't like the reminders, but you were right to give them...

29. Don't worry about it...
I said just the other day in another Tucker thread that I hav a love/hate relationship with him. Sometimes he comes out and speaks the unvarnished truth - and I'm left speechless. And at other times I could just smack him. I see potential for Tucker's inner liberal to break through - he never was much of a neo-con Chimp supporter to begin with.

Welcome to DU!
