Fucking media -- MOVE ON. YOU HAVE NO INFORMATION
"At this point, we don't know..."

That's all I'm hearing right now.

I HATE the media. Move on to another story. When something else happens, you can go back.

Asshats.

1. God, I know...
They just keep rehashing the skeletal info they have like they're cramming for a test.

"Oh but maybe somebody just tuned in..."

meh.

7. Somebody did just tune it and wants to know what's going on.
It'll happen over and over all afternoon. You may even tune in to see what, if any, new information has been released.

If you were running a news operation, you'd damn well better keep mentioning the story or new viewers will quickly go elsewhere for the latest --- even if there isn't any new information.

But you are clearly not running a broadcast news organization because you don't have the slightest clue about audience desires.

9. Yes, but the people who watch don't just get their info and leave
Instead of running actual info over and over they have speculation and other useless nuggets of non-info to convince people that they're actually watching a continuous broadcast.

24 hour TV news is just a bad idea.

10. God! I hope you are joking. News is never a bad idea. Soaps
may be a bad idea but news as an idea is purely good in a democratic society. The implementation may be bad or skewed. But the idea of broadcasting news to the citizens is never bad.

As for tune in a tune out: from a purely technical data viewpoint, that tune-in viewer who then tunes out, gives the station credit for a full quarter hour in the ratings.

I'm not advocating watching nothing but news or staying to watch nonsense news. The mere fact that the 24 hour news broadcasts are there must be considered a net positive to the Republic.

If you'd like to see the 24-hour news channels replaced by soap operas, religious nuts, reality shows or games programs, you are simply wrong.

15. But you are clearly not...
running a broadcast news organization because you don't have the slightest clue about audience desires!!!???
See, that's what's wrong with news media today. It is a commodity that must compete in the marketplace along with Oprah, Soaps, Jerry Springer and all the other drivel that the "audience desires". It is the nature of mass marketing to appeal to the lowest common denominator, hence the plethora of feebleminded "content" on all media outlets. Yes, I know there is a market out here for this trash but when news coverage is forced into the same constraints as the rest of the spewage it bothers me!
"Serious" news like PBS's Newshour suffer from a different malady. The in depth coverage always seems to consist of some "expert" from a think tank spewing forth on the topic from his or her think tank perspective (i.e. the viewpoint that the think tank is in business to advance).
Real journalism involves a commitment to look below the surface of events and connect the events until some larger context begins to emerge in which seeming random events are exposeed as belonging to a more cohesive whole.
Remember Gary Webb's expose, Dark Alliance? One of the most shameful episodes in the history of American journalism. No, not the story but the reaction to the story on the part of the "mighty Whirlizter" in the face of government intimidation. Webb's story was right on and deserved the full support of a "free" press but instead he got the shaft from cowards running broadcast news organizations!
To hell with audience desires! Give them what they need, the bitter TRUTH no matter how much it hurts!... (or affects the ratings)

17. If you produce the best TV newscast ever and NO BODY watches
you've achieved nothing as a journalist. That is the problem.

You cannot say "to hell with audience desires" and succeed as a journalist in any sense. Real journalism involves a commitment to communicate valuable, accurate and insightful information to other people. Writing or producing wonderful journalistic pieces that are never seen is the functional equivalent of masturbation.

The News Media are not what's wrong with journalism. They are journalism today. It is where the voters are and therefore the most important journalism of our age.

You understand, I presume, how elitist your post reads?

18. Rock and a hard place
If you produce the best TV newscast ever and nobody watches, it says more about the audience than it does about the journalist doing the producing. I understand the conundrum. Rather than seeking the lowest common denominator (at the risk of sounding elitist) perhaps a little creativity could be used to introduce a higher caliber of audience desire.
I am sympathetic to your position. It must be frustrating to work in the present day media environment where the majority of outlets are owned by large corporations with vested interests in presenting the news without doing any damage to current or potential customers, while endeavoring to maintain the appearance of journalistic integrity.
The Gary Webb example was meant to highlight that particular hazard.
I think there is a growing suspicion of big media in this country becsause it is so often perceived to be the mouthpiece of vested interests. The disclosures about Operation Mockingbird did little to reassure the public.
Good luck with your career as a news producer. I hope you will be able to communicate valuable, accurate and insightful information while being spared the functional equivalent of masturbation.

16. What are you smoking?
I'm pretty sure I have seen plenty of stories about NK with nukes, the pedophile republican, and the Iraq occupation. The plane crash happened mere hours ago. Maybe the concept of news is confusing to you.
