Stop Republican election tampering
Dear MoveOn member,

If it weren't for Katherine Harris in 2000, Al Gore would have been president. If it weren't for Ken Blackwell in Ohio in 2004, John Kerry might be president today. And the writing is on the wall for '08: Republican operatives in charge of elections will bend the rules to put their party's candidates in office.
We have an opportunity to protect the 2008 election today—by defeating Republicans running for the office of Secretary of State—the single most important office in control of elections in each state.

Can you make a small donation to take back the office of Secretary of State in '08 battleground states?

Our friends at the Secretary of State Project have identified the races and the candidates. Now it's up to us. Whatever you can give today—$5, $20, or $100—will go a long way to protecting all our votes in the next presidential election.

Each candidate supported by the Secretary of State Project has publicly committed to:

* Protecting every eligible American's right to vote
* Expanding voter registration
* Ensuring a transparent process for counting ballots that includes auditable paper records for voting machines

Each of these races will be critical in 2008—they're in states where the presidential vote was close in 2004 and where there's the threat of an anti-democratic Republican taking office.

Please invest in Secretaries of State who will fight for election integrity at:

Thank you for all you do.

2. I agree. The Secretary of State races are THE most important races in the
country. And if you don't want to contribute to MoveOn because they joined in the mind-boggling silence of the Democratic Party leadership on election fraud '04 and in failing to alert the public to the electronic voting coup that had occurred in 2002-2004 (Bushite corporations gaining control over vote tabulation with TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code), contribute directly to the campaigns of good Sec of State candidates.

Here are two of the most important races:

www.debrabowen.com (Calif Senator running for Sec of State to reform election system)
www.johnbonifaz.com (running for Massachusetts Sec of State on strong election reform and antiwar platform)

In Calif, Democratic leaders joined with Bushites, Schwarzenegger and corrupt county election officials, such as Connie McCormack in Los Angeles, to oust our good Sec of State Kevin Shelley* (in early 2005) and install Diebold shill (Bruce McPherson) appointed by Schwarz. DEBRA BOWEN is running against this appointee McPherson, who now has to "earn" his office on behalf of the Bushite corporate electronic voting corporations who will be "counting" the votes under a veil of corporate secrecy. Even with this huge handicap, BOWEN--who has been a strong advocate for open, transparent and accountable government throughout her career--can probably win. Due to the strong influence that Calif can exert on election integrity issues nationwide, I would say, of Bowen and Boniface, that Bowen's race is the most important (if you have to choose, re making a donation). But it's a hard choice. Boniface has been a brilliant activist on election reform issues.

---------------

*(Shelly was elected in 2002 by the people of California to safeguard our elections. Faced with an electronic voting mess created by his Republican predecessor (Bill Jones, who now works for e-voting company Sequoia), Shelley sued Diebold for their lies about the security of their machines, demanded to see their source code, decertified their touchscreens and provided Californians with a paper ballot option at the polling place, prior to the 2004 election. He also banned "revolving door" employment in his office and began to ride herd on corrupt county election officials, whose heads had been turned by the lavish lobbying of electronic voting corporations, the heady power of big e-voting contracts and the culture of secrecy that corporations introduced to our election process. Shelley--possibly the most honest man to ever hold office in the U.S.--was then "swiftboated" out of office on entirely bogus corruption charges, and replaced with appointee McPherson, while our Democrats in the CA Senate and Assembly, with 2 to 1, and 3 to 2 majorities, sat back and let this happen, hid under their desks, or colluded with corrupt county officials. McPherson has now ILLEGALLY re-certified Diebold touchscreens and is undoing all of Shelley's reforms. The "swift-boating" of Kevin Shelley was the ugliest thing I have ever seen in Calif politics. And I'm still amazed and angry about it. But it should stand as a warning to the nation that our party is not innocent of electronic voting corruption, and we should beware of any of its proposals that do not include a total and complete ban on TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY vote counting software and any element of private corporate control over our elections. BOWEN does not take these strong stances; however her work on open and accountable government indicates that she would handle the process of election reform fairly, and that election reform groups and voters advocates would be able to influence policy in the right direction. McPherson has been deaf to all concerns about electronic voting the way Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld are deaf to the American people on their goddamned war and everything else. People with guaranteed (s)election don't have to listen.)
