Militia mortar attack destroys US ammo dump in Baghdad by Dave Clark
1 hour, 24 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraqi militia have fired a mortar round into a US military base in Baghdad, triggering a thunderous series of explosions that destroyed an ammunition dump and rocked the entire city.

The munitions store in Forward Operating Base Falcon was still burning Wednesday, more than 13 hours after the strike set off a blaze that lit up the night sky and spread panic in the already shell-shocked Iraqi capital.

"Intelligence indicates that civilians aligned with a militia organisation were responsible for last night's mortar attack," said US army Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Withington, spokesman for Multinational Division Baghdad.

Surprisingly, there were no reports of casualties among the more than 2,000 US military and civilian personnel at the camp, nor among the citizens of Baghdad, whose night was disturbed by several hours of terrifying detonations.

3. Here's why
<snip>
The Islamic Army in Iraq, one of a number of armed groups operating in the country, claimed responsibility for the attack.

A statement posted on the group's website read: "The Islamic Army ... rockets and mortar bombs ... at a base for the occupying American forces."

You mean the US military "uses civilians as shields" hiding munitions
bases among civilian populations? Tsk, tsk.

7. No casualties but a lot of armament to be replaced at tax payer expense
Somebody is making a bundle off these type things. Government contract (No-bid) I'm sure will be for millions if not billions and much of that money will end up back in Republican hands...

12. What about the depleted uranium resulting from these explosions?
No one's talking about that, either.

6. Good question. I specifically watched GMA this morning to see
a report on that, since I don't have cable and didn't see any of the footage last night. Although one of the rolling crawls mentioned that insurgents had hit the ammo dump, the only mention of it in GMA's morning headlines was very brief and basically "fire broke out, nobody hurt".

9. News block out is what my instincts say, too.
Nothing on Drudge, very strange.
Let's see a) if Rush pooh poohs it and
b) what foreign press does with it.

Cynically,

10. I looked for news this morning and Nothing! Last night someone posted
five different versions of what happened from different news sources including the BBC and yet the video was only briefly shown on MSNBC and CNN last night. Who made the decision to shut it down? (like we don't know)

Would think it would be important enough that cables would overide the Bushies on this one. If we are forced to watch car chases and Jon Benet's supposed killer arriving on planes...why shouldn't we know what happened when a big Ammo Depot is blown up in Iraq?

13. NPR reported that it was a fire in a US ammo dump that caused explosions.
The Sunni's claimed responsibility, but a spokesman for the military said it was the Shiites. Was the ammo dump and US base bombed? US Causalities? Civilian casualties? The lack of info combined with the size of the blastS sure makes me expect a cover up.

Gave attribution to the Islamic Army.

16. CNN has been showing a three-second clip, no story
Just a "bit" in their News Update, wherein they also report that no one was hurt or injured. Next, It's going to snow this winter! Full story coming up after the break.
