LTTE: Why didn't George Allen serve when he was of strong mind & body?

Date published: 10/11/2006. Free Lance-Star, Fredericksburg VA

I may be biased as a military veteran, but I lean in favor of those candidates who have served honorably in our military.

Why have only a small number of those elected to Congress ever served in our military? Could this sad fact be part of the serious problem of corruption and poor leadership by example that we see in Congress today?

I firmly believe that those who have served in our military are more likely to be better public servants.

Why? Because military service is evidence of a person's true loyalty, love, and respect for our great country and the principles of freedom we stand for.

When I compare Sen. George Allen and his opponent, James Webb, I see that George Allen has never served a day in the military, while James Webb has served honorably in the Marine Corps.

Webb fought in the Vietnam War and received a Navy Cross and two Purple Heart medals for his brave service.

So my question to George Allen is this: Why didn't he serve his country in the military when he was of strong mind and body to do so?

I hope and pray that my fellow veterans and all Virginians who want better leadership in Congress, who love freedom, and who want a more secure America will vote Nov. 7 to elect James Webb, a proud veteran, as our next U.S. senator from the great commonwealth of Virginia.

Jerry Kirven

2. They were at home, fighting........
the much more important "war of ideas". At least that's what they say most of the time when asked. I had no idea that the "war on ideas" here at home was that out of control or that there even WAS a "war on ideas" for that matter.

We can thank these brave Republicans who served so selflessly in the "war on ideas". Just imagine what ideas may have occurred without their constant vigilance? I salute you, :patriot: "idea warriors". :eyes:

4. I do not think one has to be in the service to be a good Am.
Maybe, if you like to send people to war for no reason. Most Am. have never been in and are good Am. Most of our wars have had a reason. I am not so sure about the Indian, Spanish, Korea, Vietnam and the whole Iraq wars. Well that covers a good many I guess I do not like wars.

6. This 'logic' has been used to keep women out of office, but I think it's .
valid when addressing the chickenhawks who are all for wars they and their kids don't have to fight.

7. I agree
I don't think of military service as a qualifier or dis-qualifier for public office. I do tend to think we need to listen to folks who have had bullets zinging past their heads when we are considering sending our youth into harm's way.

8. Military service doesn't mean you're a better congressperson
But if you support a war as long as you don't have to fight it, and you're all gung-ho to send other mothers' children to die so your wealthy friends can get even richer, well, that makes you a scumbag. The biggest fight Mr. Bushie got on his pro-torture bill was from veterans.
