New Sibel Edmonds Video: She's a First Amendment Cannonball
Edited on Tue Oct-10-06 04:48 PM by lukery
Sibel has posted a new YouTube video about her winning the PEN/Newman’s Own First Amendment Award earlier this year. The transcript is below. Sibel makes as an appearance, as does Rep Carolyn Maloney, Ann Beeson (ACLU), Sen Frank Lautenberg, and Paul Newman.

Her acceptance speech for the award is here and a ten minute audio of a lovely speech she gave in the morning here

A snip from her speech:
Standing up to despotism and tyranny has always been considered illegal by those in power, and dangerous to those who would expose them. Today we are facing despots who use ‘national security’ to push everything under a blanket of secrecy; to gag and call it a privilege; to detain without having to show a cause; and to torture yet believe it’s fully justified.

We must be vigilant & fight back, for our freedom is under assault – not from terrorists – for they only attack us, not our freedom, and they can never prevail. No, the attacks on our freedom are from within, from our very own government; and unless we recognize these attacks for what they are, and stand up, and speak out – no shout out – against those in government who are attempting to silence the brave few who are warning us; then we are doomed to wake up one sad morning and wonder when and where our freedom died.

Here's the transcript of the PEN video:

Voiceover: Sibel Edmonds lives in suburban Washington and never expected to become, in the words of a Vanity Fair headline, "An Inconvenient Patriot.”

Rep Carolyn Maloney (D. NY): She is a modern day Paul Revere! She stood up and said "This is wrong." And they told her to shut-up and she just kept on talking. And they told her to shut-up again, and took away her security clearance, took away her job, and she still just kept on talking.

Sibel Edmonds: They have threatened me that they will put me in jail

Voiceover: Edmonds was born in Iran. One of her earlier memories: the Shah's secret police, SAVAK, searching her family's house in Tehran. Then, the Ayatollah Khomeini's revolution.

One time, Revolutionary Guards surrounded an eleven year old Sibel and told her she could go to jail because her headscarf was not modest enough. Her family fled to Turkey, Sibel ended up in college in Maryland. Her languages included English, Farsi, Turkish and Azerbaijani. After 911, Edmonds decided to go to the FBI. They did not have a single translator who could speak Turkish - she became a contract linguist, translating conversations, seized documents and wiretaps of foreign officials under suspicion.

Ann Beeson (ACLU): And she discovered, in fact, that there had been serious security breaches which could jeopardize the work, and jeopardize the investigation - and also in fact that there was a person that she was just convinced was a spy, from another country.

Voiceover: She told her boss. And her bosses boss. But nothing changed. Then further, the Justice Department, the Office of the Inspector General, and two senators on the Judiciary Committee. When action was taken, it was the FBI firing her. They said for her disruptive effect on the translating unit. She brought suit against the FBI for firing her. But the Department of Justice invoked the States Secrets Privilege - saying that hearing the case would jeopardize National Security. The case was dismissed. She never even got into court. The government retroactively classified briefings that Edmonds had made to Senators - yet she continued to speak out. Finally, the independent Office of the Inspector General - the OIG - investigated. Their report immediately classified by the FBI - but when an unclassified version was released it confirmed Sibel's story. Quote: "Many of her allegations had bases in fact. We believe the FBI did not take them seriously enough, and that her allegations were in fact the most significant factor in the FBI's decision to terminate her services." Even with that report, the appeal of her case was denied, so she took her case to the highest court in the land - the Supreme Court declined to hear it. Her reporters cite the ultimate irony - the hearing was denied the same day that a hunk of marble from the Supreme Court's facade fell to the pavement. But her cause is not over. The Paul Revere Freedom to Warn Act, and a similar Senate bill, to strengthen protection for government whistleblowers will now make it's way through Congress because of Sibel Edmonds' case.

Rep Carolyn Maloney (D. NY): She's a First Amendment cannonball. She speaks up for what she believes in. She's a leader. The fact that she, not only, was a strong advocate for her own case, but she became a strong advocate for the public policy, for the greater good.

Sen Frank Lautenberg (D, NJ): She had the intuition, the courage, and the backbone, to stand up and do it. And we are very grateful to her. And the PEN award is significant in that regard. Tell the public what happened - Sibel Edmonds was a heroine in this

Ann Beeson (ACLU): Sibel Edmonds is an American Patriot. She has a classic story to tell - which is the story of an immigrant, who came here seeking more freedom, and seeking a real democracy - and was unfortunately shut down when she tried to exercise her rights under the First Amendment.

Paul Newman: I'm Paul Newman. For the past fourteen years we've been honoring courageous Americans who have defended their First Amendment rights against overwhelming odds, and in so doing, affirmed the protection of the First Amendment for all of us. Sibel Edmonds adds lust re to this distinguished group of honorees with her refusal to backdown from her confrontation with the FBI. In his straight talking way, President Harry Truman said: Whenever one American, who has done nothing wrong, is forced by fear to shut his mouth, then all Americans are in peril. Sibel Edmonds would not let an intimidating FBI shut her mouth, and as a result, suffered grievous consequences, but she has persevered and we are better off for her sacrifices.

Voiceover: PEN American Center is pleased to present Sibel Edmonds with the 2006 Pen Newman's Own First Amendment Award.

26. Luke here's another online video of a speech of hers...
alongside a couple of other videos by Mike German and Anne Beeson, ACLU legal director who helped with her case.

http://www.aclu.org/scotus/2005/20230prs20050804.html

I have another speech of hers along with the ACLU that was on CSPAN when they were forecasting a year ago which cases *MIGHT* be heard by the Supreme Court (of course know as shown by this clip that it wasn't). I could try and put it online later at some point.

4. Sibel Edmonds
Thanks for posting this item. I doubt that it will be featured on the M$M or on Public Radio for that matter. The Sible Edmonds story has never been carried in the M$M so no surprise there. The fact remains however that her story is compelling on many levels in regard to the so called intelligence failure surrounding the accounts of Sept. 11th.
The cavalier treatment she received from the FBI and other agencies might give rise to "conspiracy" thinking at worst and demands for accountability at best.
It's great for her to be recognized by this award but unfortunately this kind of recognition does little to crack the wall of court mandated silence that still surrounds her story. I think it will prove to be part of a much larger and sordid narrative which maybe one day will find the light of day, unless it is deemed too destructive of "national security" ever to be disclosed in its entirety. We still don't have all the information on JFK for crap sake!

We are very close to the truth. We know Sibel blew the whistle on Turkey, Dennis Hastert, Perle and Feith and Marc Grossman. And as Sibel likes to say, "Buckle up kids, more is coming!"

34. Sibel, congrats!
You really deserved this one! It was good to actually see Paul Newman pay tribute to you personally. Makes me feel that much better about getting his cereal at Costco! :)

Though John Murtha is also very deserving of recognition, I think they really missed the boat in not getting you that JFK Profiles in Courage award. If there was any person that that award was created to acknowledge it was someone like you, who really risked a lot more than any of the others mentioned in the list, including Mr. Murtha!

The PEN award of course makes up for that earlier mistake!

37. Dennis Hastert plays a major part in Sibel's story. Link
Kill the Messenger: Sibel Edmonds

...she reported hearing Turkish wiretap targets boast that they had a covert relationship with a very senior politician indeed—Dennis Hastert, Republican congressman from Illinois and Speaker of the House since 1999. The targets reportedly discussed giving Hastert tens of thousands of dollars in surreptitious payments in exchange for political favors and information...

14. Yea Sibel! Most controversial stuff not mentioned though
She has interesting information not only with respect to FBI mismanagement...but also for what she heard in some of her translating...things having to do with 9/11, other countries, drug money, and US officials going to jail. THIS is what she's gagged for and THIS is the information that needs to come out.

Great and brave lady....

18. Sibel winning the PEN/Newman’s Own First Amendment Award
Hey Lukery,

Some how I totally missed this earlier this year.

I can't imagine anyone more deserving than Sibel winning the Pen/Newman's Own First Amendment Award.

And I believe Sibel should be awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for all she's done in exposing George Dubya's traitorous administration.

Keep up the good fight.

19. Edmonds is a true American hero...one who told the truth. KR
Compare her actions, which she took at great risk, to those EPA officials who failed to blow the whistle on the poisoning of New Yorkers and other who helped at the World Trade Towers site. They had informaition that people in dire need of relief and comfort were being sent into an toxic are that would poison them. I know one of those rescue workers, a good friend, who struggles today with NEW problems acquired after selfless sacrifice. Would there have been a Sibel Edmonds at EPA many would be without real suffering now.

Thanks for this post!!

25. What burns me about this story, autorank, is that
by making everyone on site at Ground Zero wear a $40 respirator, they could have prevented a huge proportion of these exposure-related diseases.

$40.00. But it would have punctured the myth that everyone in NY could go about their business without fear. So the folks who worked the pile were sacrificed for the sake of: business.

Who made the decision that EPA was going to find the site "safe"? Could it have been Mr. Asbestos himself?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- September 5, 2006

The 9/11 Commission: A Play on Nothing in Three Acts

By Sibel Edmonds & Bill Weaver

A wag once famously said that Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot was a play where nothing happened . . . twice. The two former co-chairmen of the 9-11 commission report, Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton, have released a new book, "Without Precedent: The Inside Story of the 9-11 Commission." This book goes Beckett one better – it is the third act of veneer over substance, self-aggrandizement over serious analysis, and cliché over perspicacity. It is another calculated attempt by the former commissioners to place themselves in the media spotlight, and to overcome the humiliation of their widely criticized and mostly debunked report. It is a vapid and substanceless attempt to claim moral high ground and present the co-chairmen as heroes of honesty. It would be a farce, except that it has no story line, save the aggrandizement of the authors. At least they are consistent in doing nothing and proclaiming that to be a sign of their devotion to the country and the government. Beckett once said that “habit is the ballast that chains the dog to its vomit,” and by this measure the chain restraining Kean and Hamilton is a short one indeed.

As you recall, Act One, “The Dirty Ten Digging on 9/11,” consisted of extraordinary performances by every single member of the commission to convince us, the audience -- the gullible public -- of commission independence, and its intent to provide our nation with the truth, nothing but the whole truth; their pledge to hold the ‘culprits’ accountable, no matter how high or low on the ladder of the bureaucracy; their commitment to provide “meaningful fixes and remedies,” regardless of any resistance they may have to face.

During Act Two, the commissioners, led by their stars, Kean and Hamilton, put on the performance of their lives. They delivered a document that promised to be more than the mere sum of mortal intelligence; they promised a report that drew on the nation’s soul and would lay bare the necessity and nature of change.

especially if this is for the good of the people and exposes more corruption within the government. -- Quite obvious is the notion to be silent or/and Dems are equally as responsible as Repugs for the silencing of Sibel Edmonds. (shhhh)
