But in dozens of interviews here in southeastern Virginia, a conservative Christian stronghold that is a battleground in races for the House and Senate, many said the episode only reinforced their reasons to vote for their two Republican incumbents in neck-and-neck re-election fights, Representative Thelma Drake and Senator George Allen.

“This is Foley’s lifestyle,” said Ron Gwaltney, a home builder, as he waited with his family outside a Christian rock concert last Thursday in Norfolk. “He tried to keep it quiet from his family and his voters. He is responsible for what he did. He is paying a price for what he did. I am not sure how much farther it needs to go.”

The Democratic Party is “the party that is tolerant of, maybe more so than Republicans, that lifestyle,” Mr. Gwaltney said, referring to homosexuality.

5. And that is the plan

If they went after abortion like the right wants them, that would open up an entire new group of people to the debate. Right now, many are not overly worried. Hell, I'm not worried about the issue that much, but if they went after it then I'd immediately engage the process and work to defeat it.

But there is a greater plan at play than the Repukes knowledge that over-turning Roe simply won't fly in this nation and that is the perfect boogey-man to keep the religous radicals invovled. So long as abortion is legal then there will be millions of pro-'lifers' themselves engaged and voting. Sorta the opposite of what is going on with pro-choicers now. I'd wager a vast majority of independents, cynics, and non-voters would trend toward being pro-choice.

If Roe was turned, these people would galvanize just like the religious right has done and not only would choice be protected, but the rest of the kid-n-kabooodle would be out the door, all that corporate profiteering, resource rape, and cost externalization....voters voting on an issue of choice would send Democrats to the game and the right would be put out of business.

So the game plan is simple. If I am a Repuke I always want to keep the boogeyman (abortion) in play because Republican power is needed not for cultural issues, but for financial issues, its ALWAYS about the money and power. These social issues are just red meat for the base.

With abortion they toss in evolution, school prayer, "god" on the dollar and other assorted bullshit issues to make sure the fundies never miss a vote. That is why the day after the 2004 elections I was going around saying, "ok Repukes you got the government lets see you go after Roe V. Wade"....yet they wont touch it with a 10 foot pole. Not hard to see why.

7. My husband's elderly aunt is a single issue,

anti-abortion voter. She's convinced if she just keeps voting for repukes, eventually abortion will be banned since they're the "pro life" party. The repukes love and need non-thinkers like her.

And as it turns out - they do.

Anyway after the Foley Scandal there's a lot of articles going around - Marvin Olasky wrote a particularly awful one, and Star Parkers today was bad too - trying to convince Republicans of the difference between a party that has no morality at all (us) and a party that has moral standards but fails to live up to them (them).

I suspect that while Christian Conservative voter turn out will be a bit down; the depths of Liberal hatred they have built up over the years will be enough to swing them back to seeing conservatives as slightly better than us.

They NEED abortion to be legal so they can rail against it. That's the only reason most of them care about it.
