Why work for social justice?
I've been an advocate for various causes my whole life, I'm tired. I've been disappointed by my fellow americans priorities many times.I've been disappointed by weak-kneed elected officials too many times to recall.

I am starting to think selfishness is just easier.

An election is coming and the Dems are looking strong, I should be pleased, but I can't help thinking even if they win, they will make deals and end up with very watered down versions of everything. No brave politicians exist very long. They get vilified as extremists.

I'm going to rake leaves and hope this feeling passes.

1. We have to set the foot prints.. Others will follow.. People wake up
when its time to. Of course many of us think that needed to be yesterday, but in all due time. We'll get there. Things like Foley will come out. If the dems get in there, I hope we will have some dirty laundry finally aired for all to see.

2. Sounds to me ...
like you've earned the right to some social justice for yourself. Enjoy!

3. Selfishness is part of my desire for social justice
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 06:17 AM by Solly Mack
Whatever can happen to others when we turn away from social justice can happen to me.

I fight for my rights when I fight for the rights of others.

It's not with disregard for self-preservation that I act against injustices.

The "I got mind. You get yours" mentality isn't rooted in selfishness....it's rooted in contempt for people. It's a callous disregard for the well being of others. It's not seeing others as people and treating them accordingly. And you'll find a great deal of fear is inherent in such thinking.

at least that's how I see it

5. Because it's the right thing to do,
whether or not anyone joins you.

If the world is full of injustice, it's because the prevailing pov supports injustice. When the majority is wrong, you don't have to join them.

Rake leaves, allow feelings of frustration and utility to pour down the rake handle and into the ground, and keep working.

7.  I feel much better
I thought it over as I raked those leaves and i came up with an answer to my own question.
Because thats what responsible adults do, they try to make the world better for their kids, and everyone else's kids too.

Thanks for the responses
