<snip>‘After 2003 the Taleban realised it was possible to confront the Americans when they saw the success of the rebels in Iraq,’ the spokesman said, although he rejected any link between them.

‘We have not had one report indicating that they have allies in Iraq or the Iraqis come here to train them.’

A UN team of experts on Al Qaeda and Taleban said in a report late last month that techniques pioneered in Iraq were quickly spreading to Afghanistan.

‘... new explosive devices are now used in Afghanistan within a month of their first appearing in Iraq,’ it said.

‘And while the Taleban have not been found fighting outside Afghanistan/Pakistan, there have been reports of them training in both Iraq and Somalia.’
