Sitting quietly by as the other side dumps out a veritable sewer pipe full of lies AND name-calling.

The only people that would be alienated by somebody fighting back are the fellow morons who aren't ever going to engage their brains. By offering a spirited response, even if some mud is exchanged, that sends the message that there are two sides to the story -- for a change. It is a net gain, even if it is a little distasteful.

Moreover, these are not candidates talking. They are surrogates, and that gives them considerably more license. It is high time that the left use some of that license.
