Do you have the ability to do investigative reporting? After telling the FBI what you've heard, Hastert can't hurt you, but if you could continue investigating the rumors, you just may be able to get the validation you need, or prove those rumors false!

7. The FBI reporting option is a good one, then call Hastert's Office and...

...tell them you made a report to the FBI that involves a member of his staff.

This will do two things. First, the FBI is not going to reveal the substance of what you reported to them without validating the information first. It would hurt their investigation and reputation. It might dovetail with what they are already investigating. Second, it will place Hastert on notice that there is more which may come out regarding his staff, and that it could come out at any time, and he cannot silence it since you already reported it to the FBI.

I think in that case Hastert would go ahead and try to be first to disclose any negative information regarding a member of his staff, if it indeed is valid and likely to come out anyway.

You did not tell Hastert what the rumor was, but you sure as heck put him on notice that there was a matter he needed to address with his staff, and there is now a concrete notification date when you alerted him --so he cannot say he had no idea.
