'Fair and Balanced' Means Fair to All
Friday, October 06, 2006

By Neil Cavuto

E-MAIL STORY PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION
Many critics of my George Soros interview.

Among the most hurtful, those who vow never to watch me again because of it.

Trust me, many of Soros' points are extreme, and personally, I couldn't disagree with him more about what he calls the futility of the War on Terror.

Still, it is his right to say it, and my duty to question it and debate it.

I regret those of you who are leaving now, based on a single interview now.

If you're looking for me to rant, and my interviewee to listen — you're right, wrong show.

If you want me to pontificate and point and my guest to sit and stew, you're right — wrong show.

If you want me to stay fair and balanced to all sides, but whack me when it so happens not to be your side, you're right — wrong show.

And if you're angry with me for doing the very thing you say the traditional media does not — hear the other side, you're again right — wrong show.

Fair and balanced means fair to all and to all points of view.

If you want a screamer, I'm not your guy.

If you want a ranter, I'm not your guy.

If you're looking for a got-ya, I hate to disappoint 'ya.

Because this is not your show.

I very much value your viewership.

That's why I won't compromise my standards to curry it.

Not because I deserve better — but because you do.

5. Here is my letter to Cavuto:
Dear Mr. Cavuto:

I just read your piece about the importance of being fair and balanced. And since you voice your concern about wanting your viewers to regard you as a fair and balanced newsman, I want to give you a little insight on why some of us don't feel that way.

In the first place, with all due respect, most of the people who work for Fox news are viewed by the general public as having an agenda. As much as you might disagree, I'm sure you have heard that Fox is generally looked upon as THE right wing media outlet. And, as such, the news that Fox reports is taken by most "with a little grain of salt," so right off the bat, you are swimming uphill.

Then there is the matter of personal responsibility to your job as a serious journalist. The most respected newsmen in the business get to be that because no matter how many years they are in the business, people don't really know their political bent. They seem to find a knack of reporting without taking a personal stand. Tom Brokaw was able to do that, as was Peter Jennings. But I have recently come to admire some people who are openly committed to a political party, but nevertheless work hard to be "fair and balanced" in praise and criticism of both parties. These are the people who are more concerned about the future of our country, rather than the future of a single party.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen this trend on Fox news. They continue to report news as though they are the mouthpiece of the administration. I suppose there is a place for this kind of reporting. But eventually it becomes predictable and even offensive, because it starts to come over as smelling a lot like political propaganda.

If you haven't already deleted this letter, I hope you will take it in the spirit it is written. Fair and honest reporting should not just be a slogan. The citizens of this country depend on a fair and honest media to keep the politicians fair and honest. Your responsibility to us is just as important as the responsibility of the men and women who sit in the offices that we elect them to. You are the man who must hold their feet to the fire...and not for the purpose of providing warmth.

Sincerely,
