$250 Ticket To Teen for Playing Hacky Sac-Crime of "Releasing Projectile"
Teen ticketed for Hacky Sac

Police issue $250 ticket for playing on Pearl Street Mall

By Vanessa Miller, Camera Staff Writer
October 5, 2006

A 17-year-old Boulder High senior faces a $250 fine — stiffer than a ticket for speeding through a school zone — for playing Hacky Sac.

His offense: "releasing projectiles" on the Pearl Street Mall.

"I had no idea Hacky Sac is a crime," Kallen Ford said.

He knows now.

A Boulder police officer clued him in just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Ford said he and a buddy were lobbing a Hacky Sac back and forth in the fountain area outside the Boulder County Courthouse when Officer Colin Stephens approached.

6. Straight to Gitmo with him.........
Edited on Fri Oct-06-06 07:05 AM by ClintonTyree
no lawyer, no rights, no visitations.............just good old American justice. Bush style!

How ridiculous. Some over zealous mall cop asserting what little authority he has probably blew the whistle on him. He probably sees himself as a "hero" now for bringing down the hackey-sack menace. :eyes:

2. Colin Stephens wants to be nominated for Worst Person in The World!

<snip>

Stephen Barnes, 16, has been hacking along Denver's 16th Street Mall for years and said he's never been in trouble for it.

"It's an awesome spectator sport," he said. "And we've never gotten in trouble, not remotely."

Ford said he doesn't want to get fined again, and he would prefer to stay out of trouble.

"But I want to be able to do it still, because it's fun," he said. "I'll move off the mall if I have to. But I want to figure out a way so it's not against the law."

Freedom is on the march!

3. And people wonder..
... why police get less and less respect. It's abuses like this - if they have no respect for the law how do they expect anyone else to.

10. Between that and the eagerness to use their weapons.
There is a completely new breed of police officer on the street. Wearing their lead shot weighted gloves, bully boys. Their SWAT Teams, kicking in doors, the friendly cop on the street is an image of the past past, now it is a cold, mean, authoritarian prick like that. Flaunting his power because he can.

8. Our "Homeland Security" dollars.......
at work. Specially trained "Hacky-Sack" S.W.A.T. teams around the country have been trained to handle this ever growing and disturbing problem. We good citizens can sleep easier tonight knowing this hardened "Hacky-Sack" terrorist is going to be brought to justice. :patriot: Good work, men!

17. wonder why the "projectile law" was created
I can understand why they might not want people playing frisbee on Pearl Street.

It is a commercial zone. It has some roomier areas but it is full of tourists, performers and people.

Playing football or throwing a frisbee could result in accidents...but hacky sac??? that seems a bit strange..
