Foley our October surprise?

I know this probably has been mentioned before. It's kind of scary to think what Rove is going to pull out of his hat to counter this whole mess. I bet people die....

1. I very seriously doubt this scandal is a "Surprise". It's crappy timing.

Well, actually, it's great timing. But the fact is that they spent months trying to cover up Foley, which only put off the inevitable until closer to the election. Since the sources for the leaks are Republicans, the sounder assumption is that someone was pissed at Foley personally and didn't anticipate this would swallow up half the House leadership in the process. The one thing this war has taught us is that Republicans can't anticipate unintended consequences too good.

2. I'm not even sure Republicans KNOW there's such a thing

as unintended consequences.

They're like a chess player who equates winning with taking the most pieces. While they're crowing about taking your rook, you've checkmated them with a pair of pawns.
